Abortions And Autos Kill More In America Than Guns

Tragedies have struck again and again, with women and young students being killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado; and elsewhere.  The loss of these lives was senseless and unfathomable; and enormous pain and shock waves have been visited upon our great nation.  Advocates of gun control believe it is the solution.  However, the killer at Sandy Hook used his mother’s weapons; and she apparently knew that his mental health issues were a potential powder keg, but she could not stop him and he killed her too.  Also, at essentially the same time as the Sandy Hook killings, 22 children and one adult were injured by a knife-wielding man outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes.[2]

Guns do not kill; people do. Criminals and wackos can get their hands on guns and other weapons and commit violence, and there is nothing that can be done to prevent them—except to stop the crimes before they are committed, owing to mental health treatment, better intelligence and law enforcement.  These are violent times, which will only get much worse between now and the end of this decade; and lots of innocent people will suffer globally.[3]  However, such killings must be placed in perspective: abortions and auto accidents kill far more in America than guns do.  Indeed, there is no comparison.  Also, the FBI has reported that all homicides committed using firearms have been declining.[4]

The Second Amendment to our Constitution states in pertinent part:

[T]he right of the people to keep and bear arms [] shall not be infringed.[5]

It is part of the American culture, which is protected; and the Constitution will not be changed in this regard.  Indeed, gun sales have been rising because Americans want the ability to defend themselves as crime increases in our country, which will only get worse as the budgets of law enforcement decline during the balance of this decade.

Also, violence is glorified on TV and in films worldwide.  If Americans truly want to reduce or eliminate violence (e.g., “copycat” murders), the depiction of violence should be banned. It instills the wrong values in the kids of this world. And there is no question that Hollywood promotes and glorifies violence.

America’s resident, angry Narcissistic Brit, Piers Morgan, has been trying to change our culture—which he does not understand—by crusading for gun control, despite the low ratings of his CNN talk show, which replaced the legendary, unflappable Larry King.  Hopefully Morgan returns permanently to the UK as soon as possible, and stops “preaching” in our country.[6]

As American lawyer, conservative social and political commentator Ann Coulter has noted:

Only one public policy has ever been shown to reduce the death rate from [multiple-victim shootings]: concealed-carry laws.

The effect of concealed-carry laws in deterring mass public shootings was even greater than the impact of such laws on the murder rate generally.

Someone planning to commit a single murder in a concealed-carry state only has to weigh the odds of one person being armed. But a criminal planning to commit murder in a public place has to worry that anyone in the entire area might have a gun.[7]

On a personal note, I was a U.S. Army Infantry Officer during the Vietnam War, and I was trained with guns and know how to use them.  However, I gave away my father’s duck-hunting weapons, and do not like the idea of any weapons being around.  Accidents can and do happen.  However, I understand why so many Americans want them for hunting, and for their own protection.

Lastly, it bears repeating: abortions and auto accidents kill far more than guns do in the United States.  Abortions should be banned, and auto accidents should be curbed, if Americans and others truly want to deal with deaths instead of merely spouting rhetoric as Piers Morgan does.

I think one of the jurisdictions that is pretty satisfied with concealed carry laws is [the District of Columbia, or Washington, D.C.], where a lot of the minority women carry weapons when they live in unsafe areas.

The Roots Of Mass Murder

In a Washington Post article by this title written by Charles Krauthammer, he states:

Every mass shooting has three elements: the killer, the weapon and the cultural climate. As soon as the shooting stops, partisans immediately pick their preferred root cause with corresponding pet panacea. Names are hurled, scapegoats paraded, prejudices vented. The argument goes nowhere.

Let’s be serious:

(1) The Weapon

Within hours of last week’s Newtown, Conn., massacre, the focus was the weapon and the demand was for new gun laws. Several prominent pro-gun Democrats remorsefully professed new openness to gun control.

. . .

I have no problem in principle with gun control. Congress enacted (and I supported) an assault weapons ban in 1994. The problem was: It didn’t work. (So concluded a University of Pennsylvania study commissioned by the Justice Department.) The reason is simple. Unless you are prepared to confiscate all existing firearms, disarm the citizenry and repeal the Second Amendment, it’s almost impossible to craft a law that will be effective.

(2) The Killer

Monsters shall always be with us, but in earlier days they did not roam free. As a psychiatrist in Massachusetts in the 1970s, I committed people—often right out of the emergency room—as a danger to themselves or to others. I never did so lightly, but I labored under none of the crushing bureaucratic and legal constraints that make involuntary commitment infinitely more difficult today.

A tiny percentage of the mentally ill become mass killers. Just about everyone around Tucson shooter Jared Loughner sensed he was mentally ill and dangerous. But in effect, he had to kill before he could be put away—and (forcibly) treated.

(3) The Culture

We live in an entertainment culture soaked in graphic, often sadistic, violence. Older folks find themselves stunned by what a desensitized youth finds routine, often amusing. It’s not just movies. Young men sit for hours pulling video-game triggers, mowing down human beings en masse without pain or consequence. And we profess shock when a small cadre of unstable, deeply deranged, dangerously isolated young men go out and enact the overlearned narrative.

If we’re serious about curtailing future Columbines and Newtowns, everything—guns, commitment, culture—must be on the table. It’s not hard for President Obama to call out the NRA. But will he call out the ACLU? And will he call out his Hollywood friends?

The irony is that over the last 30 years, the U.S. homicide rate has declined by 50 percent. Gun murders as well. We’re living not through an epidemic of gun violence but through a historic decline.

Except for these unfathomable mass murders. But these are infinitely more difficult to prevent. While law deters the rational, it has far less effect on the psychotic. The best we can do is to try to detain them, disarm them and discourage “entertainment” that can intensify already murderous impulses.

But there’s a cost. Gun control impinges upon the Second Amendment; involuntary commitment impinges upon the liberty clause of the Fifth Amendment; curbing “entertainment” violence impinges upon First Amendment free speech.

I’m afraid your article is far less logical than you think. You follow your description of the attacks in China with “Guns do not kill; people do”. A complete non-sequitur. In China, 23 people were injured by a mentally-ill man on a rampage. They all survived. At Sandy Hook, 27 were killed.

Guns don’t kill – but certain guns make killing large numbers of people in short periods of time a good deal easier than any other widely-available product. Even if you suppose it inevitable that murderous rampages by the mentally ill will occur, why allow each one to be so tragically deadly?

I have several objections to other arguments you make, but little time right now to detail them – so I will conclude by mentioning that the UK and Australia, in particular, responded to school gun massacres with gun control laws – and they worked. The claim above that the Pennsylvania study found that the Assault Weapons Ban “did not work” is simply false – it found instead that there was no statistically-significant effect. If you do not understand the distinction, you should read up on it – it’s rather important.

With respect to your first paragraph, mention of the attack in China was made to juxtapose various types of mass attacks, regardless of the weapon used. Then, there is a new paragraph that follows.

Clearly, people can be killed or injured in a variety of ways, not limited to guns—much less assault weapons. Indeed, dirty bombs or other devices may be the weapons of choice in the future, not guns at all.

Second, I assume you are in the UK. Unfortunately, Brits have almost zero understanding of what the U.S. Constitution says, which is discussed in my article and comments above. The last thing we need is Brits, like Piers Morgan, telling us what to do and “preaching” about it. Frankly, it is repugnant—and I am being kind when I use that word.

Third, Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post mentioned the Pennsylvania study in his article. I simply cited him.

Congress banned what some people erroneously call, “Assault Weapons,” for 10 years ( 2004 to 2014) and discovered from follow-up research that not one extra life was saved. The ban was useless. It expired and Congress did not renew the useless 10-year “Assault Weapons Ban.”

Of All Causes Of Death (published by the CDC — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — Deaths by Firearms are Ranked as #107. That means there are 106 other causes of death each of which kills more people each year than all rifles, pistols, of all sizes and all calibers — COMBINED.

The FBI reports that “Of all deaths by firearms each year, rifles are found in only 2%.” “The FBI also reports, “We don’t even track rifles because they are seen so rarely.”

The CDC reports that “the FLU” kills more people each year than are killed by all guns, rifles and pistols, of all calibers — COMBINED. In fact, as stated earlier, there are 106 other causes of death reported by the government that EACH cause more deaths than all firearms COMBINED.

Only three causes of firearm deaths represent 99.4% of all deaths by firearms. (1) Suicides, (2) gang members killing gang members, (3) Domestic abuse (family members killing family members).

More than half of all deaths by firearms each year are suicides. About a third are gang-related, and Domestic Abuse is less than 3%. It’s important to emphasize that 106 other causes of death kill more people every year than all firearms, pistols and rifles, COMBINED.

The Fury Is Building

Obama is evil

American lawyer, author, conservative commentator, and the host of his syndicated radio show, Mark Levin, may have said it best: “I can barely contain my fury about what’s going on in this country.”

He added:

You know folks, I’ll be honest with you. I just told a friend of mine—even though I sit behind this microphone and I try to be civil and so forth—I can barely contain my fury about what’s going on in this country. I’m just being honest with you. I can barely contain it. I’m so frustrated by this tyranny, you have no idea. Now we can analyze it, we can intellectualize it, we can parse it and so forth and try to unravel it. But I’m just telling you, from an emotional point of view, it is just so damned infuriating to see the greatest country on the face of the earth run by a bunch of lilliputians, who are constantly attacking it from within.

No discussion on the news programs about an imperial president exercising an authority he does not have under our constitution. Nothing. No discussion about all the lives saved and all the people protected as a result of the Second Amendment. Nothing. They continue to perpetuate the lie, the big lie that somehow, some new regulation, some new government fiat would have prevented what happened in Newtown, Connecticut. And then they pretend that they’re for law enforcement. They pretend that they’re hard on crime when they’re not.

We have evidence over one decade after another of how the very same people pushing for gun control against law-abiding American citizens support radical left-wing judges who are soft on criminals, support weakened sentencing rules, decriminalizing this and that. Since when was Obama strong on fighting crime? Since when has Obama supported law enforcement? But here he is, you know, ‘we have to stop gun violence.’ No, we have to stop violent criminals.

Now, there’s a fury in me—I’m just being honest with you—that I’m trying to contain. Biden, the moron Senator from Delaware, taking his train back and forth and back and forth on Amtrak. Oh wow, what a guy. Anyway, so they may do by executive fiat—I’m trying to read between the lines—a national gun database. Now, why would we need a national gun database? Well, listen, we need to know who has the weapons, at all times, and how many weapons they have and what weapons they have. How come? Why? The guy that killed all those people in Newtown, Connecticut, we know who he was and we know who had the weapons, his mother. So what does this national database have to do with anything? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Oh, okay, but we need one anyway, right? To prevent what exactly? To prevent what?

GUNS DON’T KILL PEOPLE, MENTALLY ILL DO

This is the title of a new article by American lawyer, conservative social and political commentator Ann Coulter—who is also quoted in my article above—which is worth reading, and states in pertinent part:

Seung-Hui Cho, who committed the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, had been diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder as a child and placed under treatment.

But Virginia Tech was prohibited from being told about Cho’s mental health problems because of federal privacy laws.

At college, Cho engaged in behavior even more bizarre than the average college student. He stalked three women and, at one point, went totally silent, refusing to speak even to his roommates. He was involuntarily committed to a mental institution for one night and then unaccountably unleashed on the public, whereupon he proceeded to engage in the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in U.S. history.

On her first day at school, student Lynda Sorensen emailed her friends about [the 2011 Tucson, Arizona shopping mall shooter, Jared] Loughner: “We do have one student in the class who was disruptive today, I’m not certain yet if he was on drugs (as one person surmised) or disturbed. He scares me a bit. The teacher tried to throw him out and he refused to go, so I talked to the teacher afterward. Hopefully he will be out of class very soon, and not come back with an automatic weapon.”

The last of several emails Sorensen sent about Loughner said: “We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living cr** out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon. Everyone interviewed would say, Yeah, he was in my math class and he was really weird.”

That was the summer before Loughner killed six people at the Tucson shopping mall, including a federal judge and a 9 year-old girl, and critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, among others.

Loughner also had run-ins with the law, including one charge for possessing drug paraphernalia—a lethal combination with mental illness. He was eventually asked to leave college on mental health grounds, released on the public without warning.

. . . [C]ommitting Loughner to a mental institution in Arizona would have required a court order stating that he was a danger to himself and others.

Innumerable studies have found a correlation between severe mental illness and violent behavior. Thirty-one to 61 percent of all homicides committed by disturbed individuals occur during their first psychotic episode—which is why mass murderers often have no criminal record. There’s no time to wait with the mentally ill.

James Holmes, the accused Aurora, Colo., shooter, was under psychiatric care at the University of Colorado long before he shot up a movie theater. According to news reports and court filings, Holmes told his psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, that he fantasized about killing “a lot of people,” but she refused law enforcement’s offer to place Holmes under confinement for 72 hours.

However, Fenton did drop Holmes as a patient after he made threats against another school psychiatrist. And after Holmes made threats against a professor, he was asked to leave campus. But he wasn’t committed. People who knew he was deeply troubled just pushed him onto society to cause havoc elsewhere.

Little is known so far about Adam Lanza, the alleged Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooter, but anyone who could shoot a terrified child and say to himself, “That was fun—I think I’ll do it 20 more times!” is not all there.

It has been reported that Lanza’s mother, his first victim, was trying to have him involuntarily committed to a mental institution, triggering his rage. If true—and the media seem remarkably uninterested in finding out if it is true—Mrs. Lanza would have had to undergo a long and grueling process, unlikely to succeed.

As The New York Times’ Joe Nocera recently wrote: “Connecticut’s laws are so restrictive in terms of the proof required to get someone committed that Adam Lanza’s mother would probably not have been able to get him help even if she had tried.”

Taking guns away from single women who live alone and other law-abiding citizens without mental illnesses will do nothing about the Chos, Loughners, Holmeses or Lanzas. Such people have to be separated from civil society, for the public’s sake as well as their own. But this is nearly impossible because the ACLU has decided that being psychotic is a civil right.

Consequently, whenever a psychopath with a million gigantic warning signs commits a shocking murder, the knee-jerk reaction is to place yet more controls on guns. By now, guns are the most heavily regulated product in America.

It hasn’t worked.

Even if it could work—and it can’t—there are still subway tracks, machetes, fists and bombs. The most deadly massacre at a school in U.S. history was at an elementary school in Michigan in 1927. It was committed with a bomb. By a mentally disturbed man.

How about trying something new for once?

There is no concealed carry in the District of Columbia; registered handguns are permitted within private homes (with trigger locks, in gun safes or disassembled). There is concealed carry in Virginia.

Retailers in high-crime areas have had ‘unofficial’ firearms on-premises in the District in the past; this was routinely overlooked by Metropolitan Police.

The 2d Amendment is irrelevant as it specifically allows what is not prohibited elsewhere. Firearms are a legal good, generally; they are no different from similar machines capable of great damage (gas pipelines, passenger-carrying ships and vessels) and should be treated the same.

The 2d Amendment gives interested 3d parties means to appoint themselves as special ‘defenders of the Constitution’ in ways that are un- or anti-Constitutional: for example, it empowers insurrectionists up to the point of insurrection.

Like the other Amendments, the 2d can be repealed (as was the 18th) or subject to modification (the 5th by the 14th).

Firearms should be treated no differently than jet airliners or transit buses. If you are going to drive one, you better know what you’re about and someone responsible has to sign off on you.

Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. agreed Friday to plead guilty to charges of misusing campaign funds, in an apparent bid to an end a federal investigation that threatens to also implicate his wife, former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson. Both had resigned their offices in recent months, reportedly as part of the congressman’s negotiations with prosecutors.

Unfortunately though it isn’t so just a case of guns being legal in the US – it’s the whole American ‘whoop-ass’ culture that is hell bent on smashing and killing things for entertainment – and that is what needs to change before any gun control will have any effect.

My Twilight Years—Clint Eastwood

As I enjoy my twilight years, I am often struck by the inevitability that the party must end. There will be a clear, cold morning when there isn’t any “more.” No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat.

It seems to me that one of the important things to do before that morning comes, is to let everyone of your family and friends know that you care for them by finding simple ways to let them know your heartfelt beliefs and the guiding principles of your life so they can always say, “He was my friend, and I know where he stood.”

So, just in case I’m gone tomorrow, please know this.

I voted against that incompetent, lying, flip-flopping, insincere, double-talking, radical socialist, terrorist excusing, bleeding heart, narcissistic, scientific and economic moron currently in the White House!

Participating in a gun buyback program because you think that criminals have too many guns is like having yourself castrated because you think your neighbors have too many kids.

The Price Of Fetal Parts [UPDATED]

Planned Parenthood’s reaction to the release of a clandestinely recorded conversation about the sale of fetal body parts was highly revealing. After protesting that it did nothing illegal, it apologized for the “tone” of one of its senior directors.

Her remarks lacked compassion, admitted Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards. As if Dr. Deborah Nucatola’s cold and casual discussion over salad and wine of how the fetal body can be crushed with forceps in a way that leaves valuable organs intact for sale is some kind of personal idiosyncrasy. On the contrary, it’s precisely the kind of psychic numbing that occurs when dealing daily with industrial scale destruction of the growing, thriving, recognizably human fetus.

This was again demonstrated by the release this week of a second video showing another official sporting that same tone, casual and even jocular, while haggling over the price of an embryonic liver. “If it’s still low, then we can bump it up,” she joked, “I want a Lamborghini.”

Abortion critics have long warned that the problem is not only the obvious — what abortion does to the fetus — but also what it does to us. It’s the same kind of desensitization that has occurred in the Netherlands with another mass exercise in life termination: assisted suicide. It began as a way to prevent the suffering of the terminally ill. It has now become so widespread and wanton that one-fifth of all Dutch assisted-suicide patients are euthanized without their explicit consent.

The Planned Parenthood revelations will have an effect. Perhaps not on government funding, given the Democratic Party’s unwavering support and the president wishing it divine guidance. Planned Parenthood might escape legal jeopardy as well, given the loophole in the law banning the sale of fetal parts that permits compensation for expenses (shipping and handling, as it were).

But these revelations will have an effect on public perceptions. Just as ultrasound altered feelings about abortion by showing the image, the movement, the vibrant living-ness of the developing infant in utero, so too, I suspect, will these Planned Parenthood revelations, by throwing open the door to the backroom of the clinic where that being is destroyed.

It’s an ugly scene. The issue is less the sale of body parts than how they are obtained. The nightmare for abortion advocates is a spreading consciousness of how exactly a healthy fetus is turned into a mass of marketable organs, how, in the words of a senior Planned Parenthood official, one might use “a less crunchy technique” — crush the head, spare the organs — “to get more whole specimens.”

The effect on the public is a two-step change in sensibilities. First, when ultrasound reveals how human the living fetus appears. Next, when people learn, as in these inadvertent admissions, what killing the fetus involves.

Remember. The advent of ultrasound has coincided with a remarkable phenomenon: Of all the major social issues, abortion is the only one that has not moved toward increasing liberalization. While the legalization of drugs, the redefinition of marriage and other assertions of individual autonomy have advanced, some with astonishing rapidity, abortion attitudes have remained largely static. The country remains evenly split.

What will be the reaction to these Planned Parenthood revelations? Right now, to try to deprive it of taxpayer money. Citizens repelled by its activities should not be made complicit in them. But why not shift the focus from the facilitator to the procedure itself?

The House has already passed a bill banning abortion after 20 weeks. That’s far more fruitful than trying to ban it entirely because, apart from the obvious constitutional issue, there is no national consensus about the moral status of the early embryo. There’s more agreement on the moral status of the later-term fetus. Indeed, about two-thirds of Americans would ban abortion after the first trimester.

There is more division about the first trimester because one’s views of the early embryo are largely a matter of belief, often religious belief. One’s view of the later-term fetus, however, is more a matter of what might be called sympathetic identification — seeing the image of a recognizable human infant and, now, hearing from the experts exactly what it takes to “terminate” its existence.

The role of democratic politics is to turn such moral sensibilities into law. This is a moment to press relentlessly for a national ban on late-term abortions.

Donald Trump’s Abortion Comments Spark Furor From Both Sides [UPDATED]

The heavily-biased, anti-Trump Wall Street Journal has reported:

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Wednesday said if the law were changed and abortions were made illegal, he would favor punishing women who obtain them, a break with the traditional antiabortion position that drew immediate criticism from rivals in both parties.

In an MSNBC interview, Chris Matthews asked whether women who obtain abortions should be punished, Mr. Trump said, “There has to be some form of punishment,” but declined to provide specifics.

“For the woman?” Mr. Matthews said.

“Yeah, there has to be some form,” he responded.

The candidate added, “Are you going to say, ‘put them in jail’? . . . You’ll go back to a position like they had where people will perhaps go to illegal places, but you have to ban it.”

Mr. Trump also said the men who impregnate women who get abortions should not be punished.

“Is he responsible under the law for these abortions? Or is he not responsible for an abortion decision?” Mr. Matthews asked about what Mr. Trump believed such a law should cover.

“Different feelings. Different people. I would say no,” Mr. Trump replied.

His comments were part of a MSNBC program scheduled for broadcast later Wednesday.

Most mainstream antiabortion activists and politicians call for punishing doctors and clinics who provide abortions, not punishing women who have them.

After criticism of his comments began, the Trump campaign reversed his remarks.

“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Mr. Trump said in a statement released by his campaign. “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed—like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

Penny Nance, president of Concerned Women for America, a leading conservative group, said Mr. Trump’s original remarks reflect his lack of understanding of conservative values.

“No one on the antiabortion side advocates any kind of punishment for women who are being exploited by the abortion industry” she said. “No one is in favor of punishing women who are already hurt and broken.”

Mr. Trump’s initial comments also drew swift rebuke from his rivals for the White House.

Presidential candidate John Kasich, the governor of Ohio, told MSNBC he would “absolutely not” punish women who receive abortions and said of Mr. Trump’s remarks, “I don’t think that’s an appropriate response.”

Brian Phillips—an aide to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, another GOP presidential hopeful—tweeted: “Don’t overthink it: Trump doesn’t understand the antiabortion position because he’s not antiabortion.”

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton tweeted his remarks with the caption, “Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse. Horrific and telling.” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted: “Your Republican front-runner, ladies and gentlemen. Shameful.”

Mr. Trump has previously supported abortion rights—a fact he acknowledged Tuesday night during a town hall-style event in Milwaukee hosted by CNN. Asked if he had changed his mind or learned from a mistake, he said, “I’m antiabortion, and I was originally pro-choice.” Later, he added, “I have evolved.”

Mr. Trump already faces a sizable deficit among women voters.

In the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 47% of Republican female primary voters said they couldn’t see themselves voting for him, compared with about 40% of male primary voters. Women were much more willing to accept Mr. Trump’s rivals, with only 32% saying they couldn’t imagine themselves backing Mr. Cruz and only 27% saying that about Mr. Kasich.

There is no question that this is a highly-charged issue, both politically and personally. Years ago, I believed that women had the right to choose; and I never thought twice about it.

Then, I watched a film about the growth of a fetus, from the moment of conception to the moment of birth. I defy anyone to suggest that a fetus is not a human being at each stage of the process.

Also, I read an article about a doctor in Los Angeles who carried out large numbers of abortions . . . until he began to have nightmares; and he stopped doing them.

Both the film and his article began to change my views about abortions. And then along came Ronald Reagan, who championed the sanctity of life.

All three developments changed my views completely.

Imagine the contributions to mankind that might have been made by the 55 million American babies who have been killed since Roe v. Wade. The costs to the world have been truly staggering.

One can only conjecture as to the contributions they would have made, which are forever lost like the contributions of more than 60 million human beings who were killed by Hitler, Stalin, Mao and their thugs.

Bright Flash Of Light Marks Incredible Moment Life Begins When Sperm Meets Egg [UPDATED]

Human life begins in [a] bright flash of light as a sperm meets an egg, scientists have shown for the first time, after capturing the astonishing ‘fireworks’ on film.

An explosion of tiny sparks erupts from the egg at the exact moment of conception.

Scientists had seen the phenomenon occur in other animals but it is the first time is has been also shown to happen in humans.

Not only is it an incredible spectacle, highlighting the very moment that a new life begins, the size of the flash can be used to determine the quality of the fertilised egg.

Researchers from Northwestern University, in Chicago, noticed that some of the eggs burn brighter than others, showing that they are more likely to produce a healthy baby.

The discovery could help fertility doctors pick the best fertilised eggs to transfer during in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

“It was remarkable,” said Professor Teresa Woodruff, one of the study’s two senior authors and an expert in ovarian biology at Northwestern.

“We discovered the zinc spark just five years ago in the mouse, and to see the zinc radiate out in a burst from each human egg was breathtaking.

“This means if you can look at the zinc spark at the time of fertilization, you will know immediately which eggs are the good ones to transfer in in vitro fertilization.

“It’s a way of sorting egg quality in a way we’ve never been able to assess before. “All of biology starts at the time of fertilization, yet we know next to nothing about the events that occur in the human.”

Currently around 50 per cent of fertilised eggs do not develop properly and experts believe that faulty genetic code could be responsible.

Some clinics take videos of the egg developing to try pick up problems early, while others check for genetic mutations, but that is an invasive procedure which can damage the tiny egg. Often it is just down to a clinician decided which eggs look the healthiest.

But the new findings could give and extra indication that an egg is flourishing. A video of nine human eggs coming into contact with sperm enzyme showed two flashed much brighter than the rest.

“This is an important discovery because it may give us a non-invasive and easily visible way to assess the health of an egg and eventually an embryo before implantation,” said co-author Dr Eve Feinberg, who took care of the patients who provided eggs for the basic science study and collaborated with the research team.

“There are no tools currently available that tell us if it’s a good quality egg. Often we don’t know whether the egg or embryo is truly viable until we see if a pregnancy ensues.

“That’s the reason this is so transformative. If we have the ability up front to see what is a good egg and what’s not, it will help us know which embryo to transfer, avoid a lot of heartache and achieve pregnancy much more quickly.”

The bright flash occurs because when sperm enters and egg it triggers calcium to increase which releases zinc from the egg. As the zinc shoots out, it binds to small molecules which emit a fluorescence which can be picked up my camera microscopes.

Over the last six years this team has shown that zinc controls the decision to grow and change into a completely new genetic organism.

In the experiment, scientists use sperm enzyme rather than actual sperm to show what happens at the moment of conception.

“These fluorescence microscopy studies establish that the zinc spark occurs in human egg biology, and that can be observed outside of the cell,” said Professor Tom O’Halloran, a co-senior author.

In a companion paper published in Scientific Reports on March 18, a zinc spark is shown at the precise time a sperm enters a mouse egg.

This discovery was made by Zhang, a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern. Little is known about the events that occur at the time of fertilization, because it is difficult to capture the precise time of sperm entry.

The study will be published April 26 in Scientific Reports.

Supreme Court Rejects Texas Abortion Law As Undue Burden

The Supreme Court Monday voted 5-3 to strike down a Texas law regulating the state’s abortion clinics, finding the rules were an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy.

The Texas law, signed in 2013 by then-Gov. Rick Perry, required abortion clinics to meet the standards of ambulatory surgical centers and mandated that physicians performing the procedure maintain admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. Abortion-rights advocates said that if fully implemented, nearly every clinic outside major cities such as Dallas and Houston would have to close, eliminating ready access to the procedure for women across the vast state.

Monday’s decision dooms similar measures in other states, including a Wisconsin admitting-privileges law that a federal appeals court in Chicago found unconstitutional last year. Such abortion regulations officially have been championed as efforts to protect the health of women seeking abortion, rather than an attempt to stop them from ending their pregnancies.

But in the face of a Supreme Court majority open to regulating abortion but not withdrawing the right it recognized in 1973, foes of the procedure have turned to legislation that restricts rather than outlaws it.

“Neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes. Each places a substantial obstacle in the path of women seeking a pre-viability abortion, each constitutes an undue burden on abortion access, and each violates the federal Constitution,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court’s majority.

Justice Breyer was joined by Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented.

Justice Breyer spent about 15 minutes reading a summary of his opinion from the bench. He discussed multiple reasons why the court was striking down the law, saying it created “substantial obstacles” to obtaining abortions.

Justice Alito, who wrote the main dissent, rocked back and forth in his chair as Justice Breyer spoke, frowning in apparent disagreement. For the second time in a week, Justice Alito summarized his dissent from the bench, a signal of his intense disagreement with the majority.

Speaking for about 10 minutes, Justice Alito said the majority had thrown aside standard legal procedures to strike down the Texas law, ignoring rules that should have precluded the court from considering the appeal altogether. Holding a copy of the state’s regulations for ambulatory surgical-center standards, he challenged the majority’s decision to strike them in their entirety, rather than requiring the lower courts to examine whether each particular regulation—including ones requiring fire alarms or directions to treat patients with respect—was unconstitutional if imposed on abortion clinics.

The Texas law was passed after state Senate Republicans overcame a Democratic filibuster. The statute’s backers said they were motivated to protect the health of women who have chosen to have abortions, but opponents argued the regulations were designed to put abortion clinics out of business. Implementation of the law had been partially blocked while under review by the Supreme Court.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expressed disappointment in the ruling. “[The law] was an effort to improve minimum safety standards and ensure capable care for Texas women,” he said in a written statement. “It’s exceedingly unfortunate that the court has taken the ability to protect women’s health out of the hands of Texas citizens and their duly-elected representatives.”

The lead plantiff in the case, Whole Woman’s Health owner Amy Hagstrom Miller, said, “Every day Whole Woman’s Health treats our patients with compassion, respect and dignity—and today the Supreme Court did the same. We’re thrilled that today justice was served and our clinics stay open.”

The issue of abortion has played prominently on the presidential campaign trail this year and in the debate over filling the open seat on the Supreme Court.

“This fight isn’t over: The next president has to protect women’s health,” Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton said in a tweet immediately after the ruling. Presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision, recognized women’s constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy. In a 1992 case, the court permitted regulation of the procedure unless it imposed an undue burden on women seeking abortions.

The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in New Orleans, approved the law, holding that courts must defer to the Texas Legislature’s judgment regarding health matters. In contrast, the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, struck down a similar Wisconsin admitting-privileges law, finding that it interfered with access to abortion without medical justification.

The Texas case offered the court an opportunity to clarify the meaning of its undue-burden standard.

The February death of Justice Antonin Scalia upended expectations, however, significantly reducing Texas’s chance for outright victory. Justice Scalia had been one of four conservatives expected to uphold nearly any abortion regulation, in opposition to a four-member liberal bloc likely to strike down such measures. Justice Kennedy—who has endorsed the central principle of the Roe decision but also found most abortion regulations to pass muster—held the deciding vote.

Planned Parenthood Executives Joke About Decapitating Fetuses [UPDATED]

Planned Parenthood executives joked about decapitated fetuses, admitted to altering abortion procedures to preserve fetal organs and said clinics have a financial incentive to sell human tissue in a new undercover video released Thursday.

The three-minute video was recorded at an annual National Abortion Federation meeting by pro-life investigators with the Center for Medical Progress. The advocacy group said it’s just a preview of never-before-seen content that has been sealed for almost two years due to legal fights.

In the video, Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, admits to altering abortion procedures to preserve fetal organs.

“You know, sometimes she’ll tell me she wants brain, and we’ll, you know, leave the calvarium till last, and then try to basically take it or, actually, you know, catch everything, and even keep it separate from the rest of the tissue so it doesn’t get lost,” Ms. Nucatola says.

Also, Deb VanDerhei, national director of Planned Parenthood’s Consortium of Abortion Providers, admits that some clinics are motivated to sell fetal tissue for profit.

“But the truth is that some might want to do it for — to increase their revenues. And we can’t stop them,” she says in the video.

Paul Blumenthal, medical director emeritus at Planned Parenthood of Maryland, says he’s aware that “Planned Parenthood sells a lot of stuff to people.”

Ann Schutt-Aine, director of abortion services at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, says she’ll hold a fetus in place with forceps to prevent partial-birth abortions.

“If I’m doing a procedure, and I’m seeing that I’m in fear that it’s about to come to the umbilicus, I might ask for a second set of forceps to hold the body at the cervix, and pull off a leg or two, so it’s not [partial-birth abortion],” she says.

Other top Planned Parenthood executives make gruesome remarks about abortion in the video.

Lisa Harris, medical director at Planned Parenthood of Michigan, says pro-choice proponents should just admit that abortion is murder.

“Let’s just give them all the violence,” she says. “It’s a person. It’s killing. Let’s just give them all that.”

She also jokes about trying to pull a decapitated head out of a patient.

“Our stories don’t really have a place in a lot of pro-choice discourse and rhetoric, right?” Ms. Harris says. “The heads that get stuck that we can’t get out. The hemorrhages that we manage.

“You know, those are all parts of our experience,” she says. “But there’s no real good place for us to share those.”

The release of the video comes as David Daleiden, lead investigator at the Center for Medical Progress, has been charged with 15 felonies by the California attorney general’s office.

Defense attorney Brentford J. Ferreira called the charges a “witch hunt.”

“The First Amendment must apply equally, whether you are pro-choice or pro-life,” Mr. Ferreira said in a statement.

Congressional Republicans have promised to defund Planned Parenthood in the legislation repealing and replacing Obamacare.

A young son of friends of mine had been surfing near Rosarito Beach in Mexico, and went to a hotel for the night. Two men were shown on the hotel video with an ice chest; and the young man was killed and his vital organs were removed for harvesting.

His killers have not been caught, and Mexico has closed the case. At least with respect to Planned Parenthood, we know who the murderers are. Now they must be subjected to the harshest remedies possible. Justice requires nothing less.

For 44 years, a few unelected men and women on the Supreme Court have played God with innocent human life.

They have invented laws that condemned to painful deaths without trial more than 61 million babies for the crime of being “inconvenient.”

In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling forced abortion-on-demand down our nation’s throat.

In the past, many in the pro-life movement have felt limited to protecting a life here and there — passing some limited law to slightly control abortion in the more outrageous cases.

But some pro-lifers always seem to tiptoe around the Supreme Court, hoping they won’t be offended.

Now the time to grovel before the Supreme Court is over.

Working from what the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade, pro-life lawmakers can pass a Life at Conception Act and end abortion using the Constitution instead of amending it.

A Life at Conception Act declares unborn children “persons” as defined by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, entitled to legal protection.

This is the one thing the Supreme Court admitted in Roe v. Wade that would cause the case for legal abortion to “collapse.”

When the Supreme Court handed down its now-infamous Roe v. Wade decision, it did so based on a new, previously undefined “right of privacy” which it “discovered” in so-called “emanations” of “penumbrae” of the Constitution.

Of course, as constitutional law, it was a disaster.

But never once did the Supreme Court declare abortion itself to be a constitutional right.

Instead, the Supreme Court said:

“We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins… the judiciary at this point in the development of man’s knowledge is not in a position to speculate as to the answer.”

Then the High Court made a key admission:

“If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case [i.e., “Roe” who sought an abortion], of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.”

The fact is, the 14th Amendment couldn’t be clearer:

“… nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the law.”

Furthermore, the 14th Amendment says:

“Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

That’s exactly what a Life at Conception Act would do.

But this simple, logical and obviously right legislation will not become law without a fight.

And that’s where your help is critical.

You see, it will be a tough fight, but I believe with your signed petition it is one we can win.

By turning up the heat through a massive, national, grassroots campaign in this session of Congress, one of two things will happen.

If you and other pro-life activists pour on enough pressure, pro-lifers can force politicians from both parties who were elected on pro-life platforms to make good on their promises and ultimately win passage of this bill.

But even if a Life at Conception Act doesn’t pass immediately, the public attention will send another crew of radical abortionists down to defeat in the next elections.

Either way, the unborn win… unless you do nothing.

Ireland’s prime minister has hailed the result of the country’s landmark referendum as the scale of the Yes campaign’s victory became clear on Saturday afternoon.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who led the Yes campaign, has said the country is united and has voted ‘resoundingly’ in favour of the abortion reform.

He pledged to introduce new legislation by the end of the year and called it ‘the culmination of a quiet revolution’.

Returning officer Barry Ryan confirmed the Yes campaign’s victory on Saturday evening, with 1,429,981 ballots in favour (66.4 per cent) and 723,632 against (33.6 per cent).

All but one of the 40 constituencies voted Yes, with particularly strong support for repeal in Dublin where Yes polled around three-quarters of the vote in most seats. Only Donegal voted narrowly against.

The public cast their ballots yesterday on whether to overhaul the country’s Eight Amendment which makes abortions illegal except in cases where it endangers a mother’s life.

Speaking outside Dublin Castle, where he arrived to cheers from a huge crowd, the Taoiseach added: ‘I’m very pleased with the result. It is a momentous day for Ireland.

‘The public have spoken and it gives to us the mandate we need now to bring in more modern, more liberal abortion laws here in Ireland.’

Earlier today anti-abortion campaign leaders conceded defeat in the vote after exit polls predicted almost 70 per cent said Yes to repealing the amendment.

Results have been coming in for constituencies all afternoon with the yes vote winning a majority in every one so far.

Yes had its highest share in Dun Laoghaire where 77.1 per cent voted in favour, while its lowest was 48.1 cent in Donegal which went narrowly for No.

Save the Eighth spokesman John McGuirk said it was clear the electorate had ‘come down on the other side’.

The group added: ‘What Irish voters did yesterday is a tragedy of historic proportions. However, a wrong does not become right simply because a majority support it.’

In a statement, Mr McGuirk said: ‘The unborn child no longer has a right to life recognised by the Irish state. ‘Shortly, legislation will be introduced that will allow babies to be killed in our country. We will oppose that legislation.’

‘If and when abortion clinics are opened in Ireland, because of the inability of the Government to keep their promise about a GP led service, we will oppose that as well.

‘Every time an unborn child has his or her life ended in Ireland, we will oppose that, and make our voices known.’

He said there were a lot of people who voted No who are very aggrieved by the result.

Pollsters suggested the stories of women forced to travel to the UK for terminations or take illegal pills obtained on the internet helped sway public opinion, as well as the death of an Indian dentist denied the procedure while she miscarried.

Addressing thousands of cheering pro-choice supporters in the courtyard of Dublin Castle, Mr Varadkar said: ‘The people have spoken.

‘They are saying this is a country where we trust women and respect their choices.

‘Thank you so much for making today possible.’

Meanwhile the Together For Yes organisation said: ‘This is a vote for dignity and decency.

‘If exit polls are reflected in the official vote count later today, this will be a moment of profound change in Ireland’s social history, a moment when the nation collectively stood up for women and for their healthcare, and voted for constitutional change.’

Campaign co-director Orla O’Connor said the exit poll results showed ‘a resounding roar from the Irish people’ for repealing the Eighth Amendment.

‘Our campaign and we will be forever indebted to those women and couples whose own bravery and dignity have moved hearts and changed minds – and given the scale of the victory, changed the country,’ Ms O’Connor said.

Co-director Ailbhe Smyth said: ‘This will be a moment of profound change in Ireland’s social history, a moment when the nation collectively stood up for women and for their healthcare, and voted for constitutional change.

‘Together For Yes always knew that Ireland was ready for this change, because of the evidence and facts showing the harm and the pain of the Eighth Amendment.’

Irish deputy premier Simon Coveney described it as a vote to put a ‘more compassionate and appropriate’ policy in place, one that helped and respected women in vulnerable circumstances.

‘This is a huge step forward for Ireland,’ Mr Coveney said.

Health minister Simon Harris said he could not have predicted the scale of the victory.

‘Under the Eighth Amendment, the only thing we could say to women was take a flight or take a boat and now the country is saying no, take our hand, we want to support you,’ Mr Harris said.

‘Women in crisis pregnancy, we were telling them or letting them feel like they were on their own – and today the country is saying no, we want to stand with you.’

The polling data, which suggests seven out of 10 voters backed reform, meant advocates for change were celebrating long before the first ballot boxes were opened at 9am today at count centres across the country.

One poll by national broadcaster RTE suggested around 70 per cent of the electorate have voted to end the country’s all but blanket ban on terminations, with another, by The Irish Times, recording 68 per cent in favour of ditching the prohibition.

Colm O’Gorman, executive director of Amnesty International, said he hoped Saturday would be a huge milestone for women’s rights.

‘It looks like the people of Ireland have resoundingly voted to end the 35-year-old constitutional abortion ban.

‘In this, Ireland will send a powerful message to women and girls in Ireland and across the globe that their human rights and reproductive health matter.

‘That women should be treated with dignity, equality, respect and compassion.’

While the official result is not due until later on Saturday, it appears Ireland is on the cusp of a defining moment in its social history.

Reacting to the exit polls on Friday night, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, a vocal proponent of liberalisation, tweeted: ‘It’s looking like we will make history tomorrow.’

Thousands of Irish citizens living overseas travelled home in droves to exercise their democratic right on the emotive issue.

The vote saw citizens effectively opt to either retain or repeal the Eighth Amendment of the state’s constitution, which prohibits terminations unless a mother’s life is in danger.

The specific question people were asked was whether they wanted to see the Eighth Amendment replaced with wording in the constitution that would hand politicians the responsibility to set future laws on abortion, unhindered by constitutional strictures.

If the Yes vote is confirmed, the Irish Government intends to legislate by the end of the year to make it relatively easy for a woman to obtain the procedure in early pregnancy.

Ministers have promised to allow terminations within the first 12 weeks, subject to medical advice and a cooling-off period, and between 12 and 24 weeks in exceptional circumstances.

Prominent anti-abortion campaigner Cora Sherlock has expressed disappointment at the polls.

‘Exit polls, if accurate, paint a very sad state of affairs tonight,’ she tweeted late on Friday.

‘But those who voted No should take heart. Abortion on demand would deal Ireland a tragic blow but the pro-life movement will rise to any challenge it faces.’

The exit polls represent a remarkable turnaround in public opinion in little over a generation. In 1983, 67% citizens voted to insert the Eighth Amendment into the constitution.

The seismic reversal in opinion seems to have been delivered by the younger generations.

People under the age of 53 could not vote in 1983. On Friday, those age groups seem to have backed Yes in overwhelming fashion.

Almost 90% of voters under 25 appear to have voted Yes.

Those aged 35-49 endorsed repeal by around 73%, the exit polls indicate.

The only age group to vote No was the over 65s, indicating that those who backed the amendment in 1983 largely retain their opposition to abortion – they are now just outnumbered by younger generations committed to reform.

The Behaviour & Attitudes poll for RTE surveyed 3,800 people at 175 polling stations across the country.

With a margin of error of +/- 1.6%, 69.4% voted to repeal the Eight Amendment of the constitution while 30.6% voted No.

The exit poll conducted for The Irish Times indicated a 68% to 32% Yes vote.

That poll, which has a margin of error is estimated at +/- 1.5%, saw 4,000 voters interviewed by Ipsos/MRBI as they left 160 polling stations on Friday.

As predicted, urban areas appear to have been more strongly in favour of repeal, at just over 70%.

But according to the polls, rural areas also voted Yes, with around 60 to 63% in favour.

A total of 3.3 million citizens were registered to vote in Friday’s referendum.

The Catholic Church was among influential voices calling for a No vote, arguing that the life of the unborn should be sacrosanct.

But the Yes camp, which portrayed itself as modernising and in step with international opinion, insisted repeal would demonstrate Ireland’s compassion for thousands of Irish women forced to travel to England for the procedure.

A decade after the Eighth Amendment was approved, women in Ireland were officially given the right to travel abroad, mostly to the UK, to obtain terminations. Pro-repeal campaigners say almost 170,000 have done so.

The liberalisation campaign gathered momentum in 2012 after an Indian dentist, Savita Halappanavar, died in hospital in Galway aged 31 when she was refused an abortion during a miscarriage.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, said she repeatedly asked for a termination but was refused because there was a [fetal] heartbeat.

In 2013, following an outcry over Mrs Halappanavar’s death, legislation was amended to allow terminations under certain tightly restricted circumstances.

When doctors felt a woman’s life was at risk due to complications from the pregnancy, or from suicide, they were permitted to carry out an abortion.

That did not sate the demand of pro-choice advocates.

Under pressure from the UN about alleged degrading treatment of women who travelled to England for terminations, the Irish Government began exploring the possibility of further reform, culminating in the calling of Friday’s referendum and the promise to legislate.

It is a sad day for the Ireland that I love, from which my first Irish ancestor left for America in 1850—from County Meath.

Every baby is a miracle and a gift from God. Just ask the woman who has been unable to conceive, yet is so blessed to be able to adopt.

Just ask the parents of little Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans, who fought so hard to save their babies.

I have been to Ireland 12 times, and County Donegal is one of my favorites.

There used to be a lottery that allowed approximately 50,000 into the United States each year. I know, because my Irish Love and I tried several times to have her come to the States legally, to no avail.

Her sister tried once, on a fluke, and got her Green Card.

The United States must send a strong message to Ireland. If its Eight Amendment—which makes abortions illegal except in cases where it endangers a mother’s life—is changed, and abortions on demand become the norm, Irish are no long welcomed in America.

Is this too harsh? No. As I have written above:

When a woman gets pregnant, she relinquishes her rights over the fetus. It has a life and rights of its own from the moment of conception.

Any woman who has an abortion is a killer, period. The argument that she has a right to do with her body as she sees fit is true, but it does not apply to the fetus.

An abortion is a criminal act: infanticide. Each of the mothers and the doctors and others who have participated—or participate in the future—in the taking of human lives should be arrested, tried, convicted and . . .

Abortion is the taking of a life!

. . .

IF any exceptions are to be made, they should only occur in the case of rape, incest or where the life of the mother is at risk.

It is only too bad that those demanding abortions were not aborted themselves.

Speaking for the Web site, its “Political Columnist” Michael Sean Winters has written:

With the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, the nation is about to be consumed, again, by a debate about abortion. As I discussed on Monday, the pro-life movement seems to me to be in a bind. Ever since the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade was rendered in 1973, the debate has become ever more dominated by the most extreme activists on both sides of the issue. Zero-sum debates, when the terms of debate are cast in categorical terms, and when the country is more or less evenly divided on the issue, can become a cancer on our political life.

So, it seems today. How to proceed? Where to find an opening for rational and ethical discussion?

First, the pro-life movement is at a crossroads. Many of us who believe Roe was wrongly decided and who want some legal protection for the unborn have watched in distress as the pro-life movement became an arm of the Republican Party. A key tipping point came in 2010 when the Indiana Right-to-Life Committee decided it would not endorse any Democrat, even pro-life Democrats, because of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which they labeled a pro-abortion law.

Now, the Republican Party has been taken over by President Donald Trump and pro-life conservatives have, like most other conservatives, declined to stand up to the president. As long as he gives them what they want, and they wanted Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court and a reversal of the Mexico City Policy, they have been willing to overlook the president’s obvious flaws. The Susan B. Anthony List even hosted the president as their keynote speaker this year.

How can a man who is so demeaning to women, who stands accused of sexually harassing over a dozen women, who mocks the #MeToo movement, who separates immigrant mothers from their children and whose inaction in the fight against climate change could prove to cause more death and destruction to the poor of the world than any positive government action in history, how can this man be a champion of life? It was always shortsighted to tie the movement to one political party, but to align with this man is morally repulsive and politically foolhardy. When he is booted from office, either by a free vote of the people or by a vote of the Senate in an impeachment proceeding, the official pro-life movement will be overwhelmed by the tsunami that awaits everything Trump has touched.

I don’t suspect The SBA List or the National Right-to-Life Committee is likely to take my advice. But, everyone in the pro-life movement who shares my concerns about the danger of aligning the movement with Trump needs to come together and, as loudly and conspicuously as possible, distance ourselves from Trump and from those pro-life groups that have decided to become his collaborators.

The tale on the Democratic side of the aisle is just as woeful. The power and influence of Emily’s List, Planned Parenthood and NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) Pro-Choice America on Democratic Party politics is stunning and it is funny how leftists who complain about the influence of special interest money never seem to complain about the cash flow from these special interest groups. A new generation of pro-choice leaders frowns even on the “safe, legal and rare” stance articulated by President Bill Clinton in the 1990s: They feel that “rare” stigmatizes a choice that they are increasingly proud of. Watch NARAL President Ilyse Hogue’s address to the Democratic National Convention in 2016. Getting an abortion was an applause line. It was appalling, a nonstop libertarian screed.

Hogue’s speech reminded me of the warning about moral coarsening Daniel Callahan predicted in Commonweal in the weeks after Roe was decided:

“I am willing –no, well prepared – to give her that right [to an abortion] under law. I only ask that the society that grants this right be prepared to look with unblinking eyes at just what it is doing, not deceiving itself for one moment about even one aspect of what a granting of that right does. . . . [I predict] in the best 1984 tradition, a reconstruction of history. This is done by creating a highly charged mythology of male repression, or religious persecution, or puritanical fanaticism (i.e. whichever one serves best at the moment to induce popular frenzy . . . and, not incidentally, values are reconstructed by making the value of a potential human being dependent upon being wanted by its mother.”

In Hogue’s speech, her moral compass never reached beyond consideration of what she wanted, what she thought was good for her.

Among other things, Hogue said, “It’s not abortion that bothers them, it’s empowering women to live our own lives.” Sorry, Ms. Hogue, but I am all for empowering women, and it has never been clear to me how abortion “empowers” women. It is obscene that a working poor woman with no health insurance, and who finds herself pregnant, has the choice of paying thousands of dollars to carry the child to term, or $400 for an abortion. Her circumstance is the opening I propose for pro-life Democrats. Why can’t we encourage our pro-choice Democratic friends to become pro-choices, in the plural? Why can’t the Democratic Party stand for empowering women to be able to not have an abortion? Why can’t Democrats work for laws that guarantee a woman’s right to advance in her career, regardless of whether she takes a pregnancy leave?

Don’t kid yourself. We all know that in some high-powered work places, the fact that a woman colleague can get an abortion becomes the expectation by those with whom she is competing for advancement that she will get an abortion. “What is more important, this case or your personal life?” you can hear it said. This passes for women’s liberation. I don’t see it.

Pro-life Democrats can also embrace the consistent ethic of life espoused by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. Indeed, most pro-life Democrats already do this. We oppose the death penalty. We supported the Affordable Care Act. We are suspicious of war and dedicated to addressing climate change. Pro-life Democrats can also go one step further and embrace the consistent ethic of solidarity that Bernardin’s successor, Cardinal Blase Cupich has commended. One more thing: Cut a check to pro-life Democratic candidates for office or support Democrats for Life of America.

The bishops of the Catholic Church are, in large part, in the same bind as the Republican Party. Does anyone doubt that the downplaying of their recent visit to the border — little advance notice to the media, only inviting a handful of bishops, going to Catholic Charities and not to a detention center as proposed, and starting the press conference with the observation that “there are no villains here” — does anyone doubt that this downplaying was the result of a desire not to anger the president?

But, the bishops are in a yet deeper bind. They have badly misplayed their hand for 45 years, focusing on abortion as a moral issue, not a social justice issue, and focusing on abortion and a few other conservative causes so intently that their public witness is circumscribed and suspect. Look at this bizarre press release from last week about the forthcoming Supreme Court nomination. The only issue raised? Abortion. In the debate about Kavanaugh, who is going to focus on his anti-labor record? The U.S. bishops’ conference looks like the Republican Party at prayer. Their language about President Trump does not even come close to the moral language they used against President Barack Obama. And, now, on the issue they care about, is their position that the abortion issue be kicked back to the states? Is that really a moral stance?

To be sure, the Catholic Church and her bishops can never cease defending the right to life. We would cease to be Catholic if we did. But, manifestly, they have not succeeded even in convincing their own people and it will require the bishops to actually practice the humility they promote to begin to learn how to witness in the public square to this and other important issues facing our nation.

So, as dark as things are, there are some small steps that a conscientious Catholic can take, no matter where they fall on the political spectrum. The abortion issue will become more divisive before anything improves. The Kavanaugh confirmation fight will be ugly. But, when asked what she does at her Catholic Charities center in McAllen, Texas, Sr. Norma Pimentel says “I am restoring human dignity.” That we can do. That we must do. The day we stop doing it is the day we surrender our baptismal vows.

THE LAWLESS UK: Birmingham Baby Girl Found After Being Kidnapped In Carjacking [UPDATED]

Desperate cries of ‘my baby, my baby’ were heard as a four-week-old baby girl was kidnapped in a carjacking.

Claire O’Neill, 39, fought to save her little girl, clinging to the door of her Audi A3 sports car as thieves stole it from her driveway in Acocks Green, Birmingham just after 4pm today.

The mother was dragged along the street and was sent crashing to the floor as the two suspects fled with her four-week-old baby girl in the car seat in the back.

She was later found abandoned at a health centre nearby and was reunited with Ms O’Neill in hospital, who suffered cuts and grazes to her legs in the struggle.

It comes just three days after another Audi S3 was targeting in a violent carjacking six miles away in the Nechells area of the city.

Ms O’Neill’s aunt confirmed her niece was the victim of the terrifying incident.

Neighbour Anjana Chavda, 66, a civil servant, said: ‘I thought they were just kids screaming. I went to my back bedroom window straight away.

‘I saw a lady being dragged by the car. She was holding on to the car as it went down the street. She was clinging on with all her might but she lost her grip.

‘I went into the front window and saw this car going down very fast. It was horrific.’

Her husband, Kanu 68, added: ‘I came outside and saw a woman on the floor, her knees bleeding, and her head.. She was crying hysterically.

‘People gathered around her trying to comfort her. The police took a long time to arrive, approximately 15 minutes. Then the ambulance came to take her away ten minutes after that.

‘We’ve never had anything like this happen. Not even cars stolen. We have a good Neighbourhood Watch in this street already.’

Another resident added: ‘She tried to stop them. She was screaming ‘my baby, my baby’. She was on the floor and was hysterical.

‘She was badly grazed on both legs. She obviously tried to stop them. The mother was cut up and I think she might have been taken away in an ambulance..

‘She was distraught, extremely distraught – as you would obviously be.’

West Midlands Police confirmed the pair have since been reunited after the two suspects launched their attack when the mother pulled up on her driveway.

The force said as Ms O’Neill struggled to get her child out of the grey Audi A3, the pair drove off, injuring her in the process.

Officers across the city were immediately mobilised to search for the baby and 45 minutes later an ambulance crew at Small Heath Health Centre found the youngster safe and well and still in her car seat.

Force Incident Manager Chief Inspector Tony Cole said: ‘Our primary concern was the safe return of this young child and dozens of officers, including specialist resources, were drafted into the search, which I am so pleased has resulted in her safe return.

‘We are still determined to trace the offenders who have put this mother through a 45 minute nightmare that she will never forget.

‘Please help us with any information you may have which will assist our search.’

It is believed the vehicle may have been travelling towards Solihull in the West Midlands when it was last seen.

The carjackers are still at large and police are appealing to the public to help find them.

It comes after another Audi S3 was stolen in a dramatic carjacking six miles away in another part of Birmingham on Monday.

A young mother was forced to flee with her two-year-old daughter after thieves staged an ‘accident’ and coerced her husband out of the vehicle in Jameson Road, Nechells.

Shocking CCTV footage captured the incident, which took place at around 1.30pm.

No arrests have yet been made in connection to either incident and there has been no suggestion the two are linked.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101.

THE LAWLESS UK: Butchered For A Wrong Look [UPDATED]

Aside from the chaos created by those who would seek to scuttle Brexit, and the “second coming” of Wallis Simpson—in the form of Prince Harry’s #MEGXIT—crime is taking the center stage in London and elsewhere in the UK.

It is broad daylight early on a Sunday afternoon and, just as in any other shopping centre up and down the country, The Mall in Luton is packed with families dragging bored children in and out of chain stores.

Suddenly, shouts and piercing screams erupt, the crowd parts and three teenagers start slashing at one another with knives, including a terrifying 18in machete.

Two run off – one of them wounded – as the third boy collapses to the ground with a terrible injury, blood spurting scarlet on to the polished marble floor. By the time security guards arrive at the scene, his life is ebbing away.

As one guard tries to stem the flow from a massive gash in the 17-year-old’s thigh, he pleads with the boy: ‘Hold my hand and keep your eyes open.’

These horrific scenes, caught on CCTV, are a devastating depiction of Knife Crime Britain – a tide of violence rolling across towns and cities across the country.

In Luton, many miles from London’s knife crime hotspots such as Islington or Tottenham, cases of stabbings have almost doubled over the last five years.

And no region is immune, with national crime statistics showing 40,000 blade-related incidents across the country in the year to September 2018.

Even this disturbing figure probably understates the total.

The terrifying trend is brought into sharp focus in tomorrow night’s special edition of Channel 4’s 24 Hours In Police Custody, in which TV cameras follow Bedfordshire detectives as they struggle to tackle a form of crime now so widespread it has become almost routine.

Tom Hamm is the detective sergeant who investigates the bloody Luton shopping centre knife fight.

He tells viewers: ‘I’m tired of coming into work thinking, ‘I wonder who is going to get stabbed today.’ I’ve never known it in ten years to be as bad as it is now. If you were to equate it to a disease, this would be a national emergency.’

It was nothing more than a ‘wrong’ look that led to the senseless death of 18-year Azaan John Kaleem – the second violent episode at the heart of tomorrow’s documentary.

Azaan had never been in trouble with the police and wasn’t even known to the four-man gang that killed him.

He’d been walking through Luton with his girlfriend, Shannon, when he made the mistake of exchanging looks with a boy on a bicycle on the other side of the street.

As Shannon explains it, the other boy put his hand inside his trousers as though to pull out a knife. Azaan reached towards his pocket to show he too was armed.

He had started carrying a knife for his own protection a year earlier after being badly beaten up – a terrible error.

The boy on the bike sped off and the incident appeared to have ended but minutes later CCTV cameras record a grey BMW pulling up alongside Azaan and his girlfriend. Even the police were shocked by the level of brutality that ensued.

Four boys emerge from the car and immediately set upon Azaan. One seems to punch him repeatedly – but is actually stabbing him, probably with a bladed knuckleduster he was later found to be carrying.

Azaan is left lying in the road with multiple stab wounds to his back, chest and face, blood pouring out as the gang flee. He died of his injuries in hospital two days later.

His heartbroken mother, Roseann Taylor, told me about her teenage son’s last moments.

‘When they declared Azaan brain dead, curtains were pulled around and piece-by-piece they turned off equipment,’ she said.

‘They allowed me to stand behind him. I stroked his hair and told him I loved him. We waited for his heartbeat to stop.

‘When I watched the CCTV and found out they didn’t know Azaan, it reminded me of a pack of animals seeking out their prey.

‘He was not a person, he was some ‘thing’ they wanted to attack.’

It was terrible twist of fate that Roseann had moved away from London to Luton when Azaan was a toddler. She believed Bedfordshire would be safer.

The men suspected of killing Azaan were identified thanks to a tip-off from a member of the public and were then rounded up by armed officers.

All four were known to police and one, 19-year-old Reece Bliss-McGrath, driver of the BMW, is shown in the film telling an officer: ‘When you’re not wearing that badge, I’ll slap that smile off your face.’

Well said, as always, enjoy your perspective on issues. Re: auto accidents, I would think eventually self driving cars will reduce deaths on the road. The day will come when insurance companies will no longer be willing to insure human driven cars. I wonder if this time resembles the day when horse drawn wagons shared the roads with new fangled cars/trucks. Noise & backfiring from vehicles no doubt startled the horses. A spooked horse can do a lot of damaged until calmed. Yet no one said the motor vehicles had to go. Progress always wins.

Progress was deemed to be in the offing with the emergence of the DeLorean and Edsel automobiles, and thousands of other brands that are gone today. It is my belief that Tesla will follow this path; it is simply a matter of time.

With respect to self-driving vehicles of whatever brand and kind, all of us travel down highways at times that are essentially empty, and the driving becomes routine and boring for many, such as cross-country or regional truck drivers. Surely, we think how nice it might be if the vehicle drove itself, etc.

However, we are not there yet, and perhaps we will never be, at least fully. Yes, there are those who envision self-driving Uber vehicles that will pick us up and drop us at our destinations, and then be pre-programmed to pick up the next passenger and do the same, all without a driver in the vehicle.

As I am sure you know, this will produce an endless stream of litigation and revenue for class-action lawyers nationwide and worldwide. Eventually they will settle when they have wrung out enough money to guarantee their futures, but the next batch of lawyers will be more than eager to follow suit.

Perhaps the deeper questions are whether self-driving vehicles can be programmed so no accidents occur; and whether Man (or women) will be able to override the systems and create or eliminate accidents. Toyota might no longer operate today, at least in its present form, if the true extent of its culpability had been determined in the last decade or so. Instead, it literally “bought” its way out of reputation-destroying and truly tragic business and technical decisions, with lawyers, lobbyists and P.R. experts galore being funded by the company to work in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

Tesla On The Brink Of Failure [UPDATED]

David Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital renewed criticism of Elon Musk and Tesla Inc, saying the electric car company appeared to be “on the brink” of failure again, according to a letter sent to clients of the hedge fund on Friday.

The letter cited a lack of demand, “desperate” price cuts, layoffs, “closing-and-then-not-closing” stores, closing service centres, slashing capital expenditures, rushed product announcements and “a new effort to distract investors from the demand problem with hyperbole over TSLA’s autonomous driving capabilities.”

“We believe that right here, right now, the company appears to again be on the brink,” the letter said. Greenlight is short Tesla stock, recently a profitable bet. Tesla’s share price declined from $332.80 to $279.86 in the first quarter. On Friday, shares of Tesla were trading around $268 per share.

Tesla did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Greenlight said its funds gained 11 percent over the first three months of 2019, slightly below the gain of the S&P 500 Index. Despite the gains so far this year, “it continued to be a challenging environment for our investment style with growth stocks performing much better than value stocks,” the letter said.

“In the context of this headwind and a sizable short portfolio, we are pleased with the quarterly result,” it added.

Greenlight noted that last summer, Musk had promised Tesla would be profitable and cash flow positive in every quarter going forward. “He repeated that forecast as recently as the end of January,” Greenlight said.

“That promise has failed to materialise. The question at hand is: in a few months will Musk be again bragging that he saved the company from the brink of failure, or will TSLA in fact fail this time?”

Greenlight Capital and its founder Einhorn first rose to prominence for making a prescient call on Lehman Brothers’ accounting troubles before the firm’s collapse. Late last year, Greenlight compared Tesla to Lehman.

In Greenlight’s letter, Einhorn said the fund’s biggest gainers during the first quarter included AerCap Holdings, Brighthouse Financial, Deutsche Pfandbriefbank, General Motors and Green Brick Partners.

Einhorn said Brighthouse has been misunderstood because GAAP accounting requires that hedges get marked to market each quarter while liabilities are not.

“This creates a mismatch between how BHF’s assets and liabilities are treated in response to market moves,” Einhorn said. “All else being equal, BHF benefits from rising equity markets and higher interest rates, as the economic gain from lower expected claims more than offsets the company’s losses on its hedges.”

With all the fireworks about “guns” they must be terrible threats to life everywhere. However, Of ALL CAUSES OF DEATH, Firearms are listed by the FBI and CDC at #107. That mean that there are 106 other causes of death that EACH kill more people every year than all the firearms of all calibers — COMBINED. In fact, rifles are, according to the FBI, found in only 2% of all shootings! When discovered, most of those rifles had not been fired because the primary weapon of choice in any shooting incident is a handgun.

The CDC and FBI agree on the average number of deaths from firearms as approximately 33,000 per year. The major causes of “Firearm Deaths” are reported by both government agencies as, (1) suicides, 58.9%; (2) Gang Members killing Gang Members, 36.7%; and (3) Domestic Abuse, 2.93%. The total “causes of death by firearms is 98.5% of 33,000 each year. That means the three main causes of Firearms Deaths are 32,505 each year. That leaves only 495 deaths from Firearms for which an entire political party demands the Confiscation of ALL FIREARMS! It has been reported this year that OPIOID DEATHS EXCEEDED 70,000! Yet, nobody has called for the confiscation of anything.

More people are killed by FLU than are killed by all types of Firearms (rifles and pistols and revolvers) of all calibers. More people are killed by FALLIING DOWN than those killed by all Firearms of all types and calibers — COMBINED

The FBI in its annual report states that anyone using the term, “Assault Rifle” is using the wrong term because there are none being sold over the counter. Assault Rifles were banned – in fact, ALL RIFLES AND PISTOLS OF ALL TYPES WERE BANNED FOR 10-YEARS BY CONGRESS, 1994 to 2004. Not one extra life was saved. Not one death was avoided. In fact, deaths from firearms declined. The ban expired and Congress did not renew. Yet, Democrat presidential candidates promise to confiscate all privately-owned weapons when elected to president. Have we learned nothing about firearms?

None of these laws are yet in force, either because of later effective dates or legal challenges that have blocked them. But supporters have openly predicted that the laws could spark court fights that will eventually lead the Supreme Court to revisit its Roe decision.

Gillibrand plans to fly to Atlanta on Thursday to meet with women protesting Georgia’s state law.

Sen. Cory Booker told The Associated Press that backers of the Alabama measure are “saying that they designed this bill with certain provisions — like not having any exceptions for rape or incest — specifically designed so that they can lead a fight to the Supreme Court” to “undermine other freedoms and liberties of women to control their own bodies.”

Booker said it’s not enough to hope that Roe will be upheld, adding: “We cannot wait to see if this gets worse.”

Several Democratic presidential candidates sought to use their high-profile positions to boost organizing against the state-level abortion laws. Harris emailed her campaign supporters offering to “split a donation” to four advocacy groups working to defend abortion rights. Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, directed his supporters by email to the abortion-rights group NARAL.

Among the other Democratic candidates who took to Twitter to blast Alabama’s law and other state-level restrictions were Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

Ilyse Hogue, the president of NARAL, lauded the Democrats for their support. But she urged them to go further than pro-abortion-rights rhetoric, calling instead for “articulated plans about how we’re going to address and get out of this crisis.”

The Democratic pushback comes as Trump makes his selection of conservative judges a centerpiece of his political stump speech, part of a long-running courtship of social conservatives whose support he needs to win reelection next year. Republicans have long believed that the politics of abortion have shifted somewhat in their favor in recent years. But the near-absolutist nature of the most recent bills has sparked some concern among the president’s team that it could energize Trump critics and female voters, with whom the president has long struggled.

Polling suggests that the issue of abortion has the potential to stoke political engagement among both parties. The General Social Survey released last year found 64% of Democrats, but just 35% of Republicans, saying a woman should be able to have an abortion for any reason.

Other surveys have found majority support for legalized abortion in “all or most cases.” A Pew Research Center survey in September 2018 found 58% of Americans saying abortion should be legal in at least most cases, compared with 37% who said it should be illegal in all or most cases.

Trump won the White House in 2016 in part because of strong support from socially conservative Republicans who wanted to ensure that a conservative justice got named to the Supreme Court seat that had been occupied by Antonin Scalia — a seat held open by the GOP’s refusal to confirm President Barack Obama’s pick for the lifetime post. Since his first campaign began, Trump has supported a ban on abortions at the point that a fetus is believed to feel pain and publicly released a list of conservative judges from which he would select a nominee for the nation’s highest court.

The president’s selection of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court has emboldened conservative allies of the White House who believe the time is ripe for a court case to challenge Roe v. Wade. Kavanaugh assured senators before his confirmation last year that he viewed Roe as precedent, but Democratic senators pointed to a 2003 memo he wrote that suggested it wasn’t necessary to call the landmark abortion-rights ruling “settled law” because the “Court can always overrule its precedent.”

The Trump campaign deferred to the White House on whether Trump supported the Alabama measure or other restrictive bills passed by other states. White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere touted Trump’s record on abortion, noting that he “is protecting our most innocent and vulnerable, defending the dignity of life, and called on Congress to prohibit late-term abortions.”

I believe in the right of a woman to do as she pleases with her body as long as it does not impose the consequences of her actions on the rights or treasure of anybody else. Indeed, any woman who has an abortion that is “elective” and not necessary (not caused by rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is at risk) should be allowed two abortions in any contiguous five year period. Any abortion in excess or 2 every contiguous five years should immediately be charged to the mother and she should be fined $20,000 plus the expenses of the abortion. In addition to the fine, any woman exceeding the limit of 2 abortions in any contiguous five-year period loses all Welfare benefits and Food Stamps and Free Health Care until the Five Year Period expires. Any 2 abortions in one calendar year removes the woman from any future consideration for Welfare or any other government or state benefits.

In the early 1970’s I was working at a law firm in Beverly Hills. I asked one of the attorneys one day why all the debate surrounding Roe v Wade was about privacy instead of whether or not abortion was taking a human life. I was told it was because the Constitution guarantees citizen’s privacy but since no one knows when life begins it wasn’t even discussed. The attorneys arguing the case knew this so they didn’t even bring it up. Do you think this is a true? I’ve never understood how anyone can look at images such as you’ve provided here of a 12 week fetus and not at least doubted our current laws. The mere fact that during an abortion a fetus must be killed in-utero so as to prevent it from possibly attempting to breath once separated from the mother is argument enough as far as I’m concerned. I cannot imagine being in the O.R. as a staff member and being forbidden from resuscitating an infant struggling to cling to life. Reliable birth control has been available for many decades. Using abortion as birth control is unconscionable.

There is no question that this is a highly-charged issue, both politically and personally. Years ago, I believed that women had the right to choose; and I never thought twice about it.

Then, I watched a film about the growth of a fetus, from the moment of conception to the moment of birth. I defy anyone to suggest that a fetus is not a human being at each stage of the process.

Also, I read an article about a doctor in Los Angeles who carried out large numbers of abortions . . . until he began to have nightmares; and he stopped doing them.

Both the film and his article began to change my views about abortions. And then along came Ronald Reagan, who championed the sanctity of life.

All three developments changed my views completely.

Imagine the contributions to mankind that might have been made by the 55 million American babies who have been killed since Roe v. Wade. The costs to the world have been truly staggering.

One can only conjecture as to the contributions they would have made, which are forever lost like the contributions of more than 60 million human beings who were killed by Hitler, Stalin, Mao and their thugs.

Pat Buchanan—an adviser to Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford, and a former GOP presidential aspirant himself—has written:

“My religion defines who I am. And I’ve been a practicing Catholic my whole life,” said Vice President Joe Biden in 2012. “I accept my church’s position on abortion as … doctrine. Life begins at conception. … I just refuse to impose that on others.”

For four decades, Biden backed the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of the tax dollars of Joe’s fellow Catholics to pay for what they view as the killing of the innocent unborn.

Last week, Joe flipped. He now backs the repeal of the Hyde Amendment.

Ilyse Hogue of NARAL Pro-Choice America welcomed home the prodigal son: “We’re pleased that Joe Biden has joined the rest of the 2020 Democratic field in coalescing around the Party’s core values — support for abortion rights.”

But when did the right to an abortion — a crime in many states before 1973 — become a “core value” of the Democratic Party?

And what are these “values” of which politicians incessantly talk?

Are they immutable? Or do they change with the changing times?

Last month, Disney CEO Bob Iger said his company may cease filming in Georgia if its new anti-abortion law takes effect: “If (the bill) becomes law, I don’t see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there.”

The Georgia law outlaws almost all abortions, once a heartbeat is detected, some six to eight weeks into pregnancy. It reflects the Christian conservative values of millions of Georgians.

To Iger and Hollywood, however, Georgia’s law radically restricts the “reproductive rights” of women, and is a moral outrage.

What we have here is a clash of values.

What one side believes is preserving the God-given right to life for the unborn, the other regards as an assault on the rights of women.

The clash raises questions that go beyond our culture war to what America should stand for in the world.

“American interests and American values are inseparable,” Pete Buttigieg told Rachel Maddow. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Claremont Institute: “We have had too little courage to confront regimes squarely opposed to our interests and our values.”

Are Pompeo and Mayor Pete talking about the same values?

The mayor is proudly gay and in a same-sex marriage. Yet the right to same-sex marriage did not even exist in this country until the Supreme Court discovered it a few years ago.

In a 2011 speech to the U.N., Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “Gay rights are human rights,” and she approved of U.S. embassies flying the rainbow flag during Pride Month.

This year, Mike Pompeo told the U.S. embassy in Brazil not to fly the rainbow flag. He explained his concept of his moral duty to the Christian Broadcasting Network, “The task I have is informed by my understanding of my faith, my belief in Jesus Christ as the Savior.”

The Christian values Pompeo espouses on abortion and gay rights are in conflict with what progressives now call human rights.

And the world mirrors the American divide.

There are gay pride parades in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, but none in Riyadh and Mecca. In Brunei, homosexuality can get you killed.

To many Americans, diversity — racial, ethnic, cultural, religious — is our greatest strength.

Yet Poland and Hungary are proudly ethnonationalist. South Korea and Japan fiercely resist the racial and ethnic diversity immigration would bring. Catalans and Scots in this century, like Quebecois in the last, seek to secede from nations to which they have belonged for centuries.

Are ethnonationalist nations less righteous than diverse nations likes ours? And if diversity is an American value, is it really a universal value?

Consider the treasured rights of our First Amendment — freedom of speech, religion and the press.

Saudi Arabia does not permit Christian preachers. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, converts to Christianity face savage reprisals. In Buddhist Myanmar, Muslims are ethnically cleansed.

These nations reject an equality of all faiths, believing instead in the primacy of their own majority faith. They reject our wall of separation between religion and state. Our values and their values conflict.

What makes ours right and theirs wrong? Why should our views and values prevail in what are, after all, their countries?

Under our Constitution, many practices are protected — abortion, blasphemy, pornography, flag-burning, trashing religious beliefs — that other nations regard as symptoms of a disintegrating society.

When Hillary Clinton said half of all Trump supporters could be put into a “basket of deplorables” for being “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic,” she was conceding that many Trump’s supporters detest many progressive values.

True, but in the era of Trump, why should her liberal values be the values America champions abroad?

With secularism’s triumph, we Americans have no common religion, no common faith, no common font of moral truth. We disagree on what is right and wrong, moral and immoral.

Without an agreed-upon higher authority, values become matters of opinion. And ours are in conflict and irreconcilable.

Understood. But how, then, do we remain one nation and one people?

When my article above was written, approximately 55 million babies had been killed since Roe v. Wade. Presumably that number has increased dramatically, resulting in more than ten times the number of human beings who were killed by Hitler and his Nazi thugs in the Holocaust.

Finally, in a 5-4 decision, our Supreme Court is partially rectifying and curbing the infanticide that it unleashed. And yes, women have control over their lives and bodies. But that does not include the right to kill another human being, or fetus.

This is the pinnacle of hypocrisy. John Roberts is the very worst decision that George W. Bush ever made, aside from launching us into the tragic Iraq War, in which more than 5,000 Americans died and many more were maimed, and trillions of dollars were wasted — for nothing.

As of several years ago, 55 million American babies had been killed since the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which is Infanticide.

This is ten times the number of human beings who perished in the Holocaust. Yet, Roberts has the gall to invoke God’s name in such unspeakable cruelty and savagery — and to do so in a Catholic church. This is blasphemy.

No American should be the least bit surprised about this. With few exceptions, judges are the very worst of the legal profession. They are lawyers who could not make it in the private practice of law.

Even worse, many judges — and most notably our Supreme Court “Justices” — have blood on their hands since Roe v. Wade. More than 55 million Americans babies have been killed as a result of abortions, which is Infanticide.

This is approximately the same number of human beings who perished in the Holocaust, and it is an abomination.
Every person who participates in an abortion should be prosecuted, convicted and imprisoned.

The very thought that Garland was ever consisidered to be a “Justice” of our Supreme Court is an abomination and a travesty. However, come to think of it, he would fit right in with the other “Justices” who have blood on their hands.
