Tragedies have struck again and again, with women and young students being killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado; and elsewhere. The loss of these lives was senseless and unfathomable; and enormous pain and shock waves have been visited upon our great nation. Advocates of gun control believe it is the solution. However, the killer at Sandy Hook used his mother’s weapons; and she apparently knew that his mental health issues were a potential powder keg, but she could not stop him and he killed her too. Also, at essentially the same time as the Sandy Hook killings, 22 children and one adult were injured by a knife-wielding man outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes.[2]
Guns do not kill; people do. Criminals and wackos can get their hands on guns and other weapons and commit violence, and there is nothing that can be done to prevent them—except to stop the crimes before they are committed, owing to mental health treatment, better intelligence and law enforcement. These are violent times, which will only get much worse between now and the end of this decade; and lots of innocent people will suffer globally.[3] However, such killings must be placed in perspective: abortions and auto accidents kill far more in America than guns do. Indeed, there is no comparison. Also, the FBI has reported that all homicides committed using firearms have been declining.[4]
The Second Amendment to our Constitution states in pertinent part:
[T]he right of the people to keep and bear arms [] shall not be infringed.[5]
It is part of the American culture, which is protected; and the Constitution will not be changed in this regard. Indeed, gun sales have been rising because Americans want the ability to defend themselves as crime increases in our country, which will only get worse as the budgets of law enforcement decline during the balance of this decade.
Also, violence is glorified on TV and in films worldwide. If Americans truly want to reduce or eliminate violence (e.g., “copycat” murders), the depiction of violence should be banned. It instills the wrong values in the kids of this world. And there is no question that Hollywood promotes and glorifies violence.
America’s resident, angry Narcissistic Brit, Piers Morgan, has been trying to change our culture—which he does not understand—by crusading for gun control, despite the low ratings of his CNN talk show, which replaced the legendary, unflappable Larry King. Hopefully Morgan returns permanently to the UK as soon as possible, and stops “preaching” in our country.[6]
As American lawyer, conservative social and political commentator Ann Coulter has noted:
Only one public policy has ever been shown to reduce the death rate from [multiple-victim shootings]: concealed-carry laws.
The effect of concealed-carry laws in deterring mass public shootings was even greater than the impact of such laws on the murder rate generally.
Someone planning to commit a single murder in a concealed-carry state only has to weigh the odds of one person being armed. But a criminal planning to commit murder in a public place has to worry that anyone in the entire area might have a gun.[7]
On a personal note, I was a U.S. Army Infantry Officer during the Vietnam War, and I was trained with guns and know how to use them. However, I gave away my father’s duck-hunting weapons, and do not like the idea of any weapons being around. Accidents can and do happen. However, I understand why so many Americans want them for hunting, and for their own protection.
Lastly, it bears repeating: abortions and auto accidents kill far more than guns do in the United States. Abortions should be banned, and auto accidents should be curbed, if Americans and others truly want to deal with deaths instead of merely spouting rhetoric as Piers Morgan does.

I’m afraid your article is far less logical than you think. You follow your description of the attacks in China with “Guns do not kill; people do”. A complete non-sequitur. In China, 23 people were injured by a mentally-ill man on a rampage. They all survived. At Sandy Hook, 27 were killed.
Guns don’t kill – but certain guns make killing large numbers of people in short periods of time a good deal easier than any other widely-available product. Even if you suppose it inevitable that murderous rampages by the mentally ill will occur, why allow each one to be so tragically deadly?
I have several objections to other arguments you make, but little time right now to detail them – so I will conclude by mentioning that the UK and Australia, in particular, responded to school gun massacres with gun control laws – and they worked. The claim above that the Pennsylvania study found that the Assault Weapons Ban “did not work” is simply false – it found instead that there was no statistically-significant effect. If you do not understand the distinction, you should read up on it – it’s rather important.

With respect to your first paragraph, mention of the attack in China was made to juxtapose various types of mass attacks, regardless of the weapon used. Then, there is a new paragraph that follows.
Clearly, people can be killed or injured in a variety of ways, not limited to guns—much less assault weapons. Indeed, dirty bombs or other devices may be the weapons of choice in the future, not guns at all.
Second, I assume you are in the UK. Unfortunately, Brits have almost zero understanding of what the U.S. Constitution says, which is discussed in my article and comments above. The last thing we need is Brits, like Piers Morgan, telling us what to do and “preaching” about it. Frankly, it is repugnant—and I am being kind when I use that word.
Third, Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post mentioned the Pennsylvania study in his article. I simply cited him.

Congress banned what some people erroneously call, “Assault Weapons,” for 10 years ( 2004 to 2014) and discovered from follow-up research that not one extra life was saved. The ban was useless. It expired and Congress did not renew the useless 10-year “Assault Weapons Ban.”
Of All Causes Of Death (published by the CDC — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — Deaths by Firearms are Ranked as #107. That means there are 106 other causes of death each of which kills more people each year than all rifles, pistols, of all sizes and all calibers — COMBINED.
The FBI reports that “Of all deaths by firearms each year, rifles are found in only 2%.” “The FBI also reports, “We don’t even track rifles because they are seen so rarely.”
The CDC reports that “the FLU” kills more people each year than are killed by all guns, rifles and pistols, of all calibers — COMBINED. In fact, as stated earlier, there are 106 other causes of death reported by the government that EACH cause more deaths than all firearms COMBINED.
Only three causes of firearm deaths represent 99.4% of all deaths by firearms. (1) Suicides, (2) gang members killing gang members, (3) Domestic abuse (family members killing family members).
More than half of all deaths by firearms each year are suicides. About a third are gang-related, and Domestic Abuse is less than 3%. It’s important to emphasize that 106 other causes of death kill more people every year than all firearms, pistols and rifles, COMBINED.

There is no concealed carry in the District of Columbia; registered handguns are permitted within private homes (with trigger locks, in gun safes or disassembled). There is concealed carry in Virginia.
Retailers in high-crime areas have had ‘unofficial’ firearms on-premises in the District in the past; this was routinely overlooked by Metropolitan Police.
The 2d Amendment is irrelevant as it specifically allows what is not prohibited elsewhere. Firearms are a legal good, generally; they are no different from similar machines capable of great damage (gas pipelines, passenger-carrying ships and vessels) and should be treated the same.
The 2d Amendment gives interested 3d parties means to appoint themselves as special ‘defenders of the Constitution’ in ways that are un- or anti-Constitutional: for example, it empowers insurrectionists up to the point of insurrection.
Like the other Amendments, the 2d can be repealed (as was the 18th) or subject to modification (the 5th by the 14th).
Firearms should be treated no differently than jet airliners or transit buses. If you are going to drive one, you better know what you’re about and someone responsible has to sign off on you.

8,775 deaths by firearms in the US per year, 87 in the UK.
Unfortunately though it isn’t so just a case of guns being legal in the US – it’s the whole American ‘whoop-ass’ culture that is hell bent on smashing and killing things for entertainment – and that is what needs to change before any gun control will have any effect.

There is no question that this is a highly-charged issue, both politically and personally. Years ago, I believed that women had the right to choose; and I never thought twice about it.
Then, I watched a film about the growth of a fetus, from the moment of conception to the moment of birth. I defy anyone to suggest that a fetus is not a human being at each stage of the process.
Also, I read an article about a doctor in Los Angeles who carried out large numbers of abortions . . . until he began to have nightmares; and he stopped doing them.
Both the film and his article began to change my views about abortions. And then along came Ronald Reagan, who championed the sanctity of life.
All three developments changed my views completely.
Imagine the contributions to mankind that might have been made by the 55 million American babies who have been killed since Roe v. Wade. The costs to the world have been truly staggering.
One can only conjecture as to the contributions they would have made, which are forever lost like the contributions of more than 60 million human beings who were killed by Hitler, Stalin, Mao and their thugs.

Well said, as always, enjoy your perspective on issues. Re: auto accidents, I would think eventually self driving cars will reduce deaths on the road. The day will come when insurance companies will no longer be willing to insure human driven cars. I wonder if this time resembles the day when horse drawn wagons shared the roads with new fangled cars/trucks. Noise & backfiring from vehicles no doubt startled the horses. A spooked horse can do a lot of damaged until calmed. Yet no one said the motor vehicles had to go. Progress always wins.

Progress was deemed to be in the offing with the emergence of the DeLorean and Edsel automobiles, and thousands of other brands that are gone today. It is my belief that Tesla will follow this path; it is simply a matter of time.
With respect to self-driving vehicles of whatever brand and kind, all of us travel down highways at times that are essentially empty, and the driving becomes routine and boring for many, such as cross-country or regional truck drivers. Surely, we think how nice it might be if the vehicle drove itself, etc.
However, we are not there yet, and perhaps we will never be, at least fully. Yes, there are those who envision self-driving Uber vehicles that will pick us up and drop us at our destinations, and then be pre-programmed to pick up the next passenger and do the same, all without a driver in the vehicle.
As I am sure you know, this will produce an endless stream of litigation and revenue for class-action lawyers nationwide and worldwide. Eventually they will settle when they have wrung out enough money to guarantee their futures, but the next batch of lawyers will be more than eager to follow suit.
Perhaps the deeper questions are whether self-driving vehicles can be programmed so no accidents occur; and whether Man (or women) will be able to override the systems and create or eliminate accidents. Toyota might no longer operate today, at least in its present form, if the true extent of its culpability had been determined in the last decade or so. Instead, it literally “bought” its way out of reputation-destroying and truly tragic business and technical decisions, with lawyers, lobbyists and P.R. experts galore being funded by the company to work in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

With all the fireworks about “guns” they must be terrible threats to life everywhere. However, Of ALL CAUSES OF DEATH, Firearms are listed by the FBI and CDC at #107. That mean that there are 106 other causes of death that EACH kill more people every year than all the firearms of all calibers — COMBINED. In fact, rifles are, according to the FBI, found in only 2% of all shootings! When discovered, most of those rifles had not been fired because the primary weapon of choice in any shooting incident is a handgun.
The CDC and FBI agree on the average number of deaths from firearms as approximately 33,000 per year. The major causes of “Firearm Deaths” are reported by both government agencies as, (1) suicides, 58.9%; (2) Gang Members killing Gang Members, 36.7%; and (3) Domestic Abuse, 2.93%. The total “causes of death by firearms is 98.5% of 33,000 each year. That means the three main causes of Firearms Deaths are 32,505 each year. That leaves only 495 deaths from Firearms for which an entire political party demands the Confiscation of ALL FIREARMS! It has been reported this year that OPIOID DEATHS EXCEEDED 70,000! Yet, nobody has called for the confiscation of anything.
More people are killed by FLU than are killed by all types of Firearms (rifles and pistols and revolvers) of all calibers. More people are killed by FALLIING DOWN than those killed by all Firearms of all types and calibers — COMBINED
The FBI in its annual report states that anyone using the term, “Assault Rifle” is using the wrong term because there are none being sold over the counter. Assault Rifles were banned – in fact, ALL RIFLES AND PISTOLS OF ALL TYPES WERE BANNED FOR 10-YEARS BY CONGRESS, 1994 to 2004. Not one extra life was saved. Not one death was avoided. In fact, deaths from firearms declined. The ban expired and Congress did not renew. Yet, Democrat presidential candidates promise to confiscate all privately-owned weapons when elected to president. Have we learned nothing about firearms?

I believe in the right of a woman to do as she pleases with her body as long as it does not impose the consequences of her actions on the rights or treasure of anybody else. Indeed, any woman who has an abortion that is “elective” and not necessary (not caused by rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is at risk) should be allowed two abortions in any contiguous five year period. Any abortion in excess or 2 every contiguous five years should immediately be charged to the mother and she should be fined $20,000 plus the expenses of the abortion. In addition to the fine, any woman exceeding the limit of 2 abortions in any contiguous five-year period loses all Welfare benefits and Food Stamps and Free Health Care until the Five Year Period expires. Any 2 abortions in one calendar year removes the woman from any future consideration for Welfare or any other government or state benefits.

In the early 1970’s I was working at a law firm in Beverly Hills. I asked one of the attorneys one day why all the debate surrounding Roe v Wade was about privacy instead of whether or not abortion was taking a human life. I was told it was because the Constitution guarantees citizen’s privacy but since no one knows when life begins it wasn’t even discussed. The attorneys arguing the case knew this so they didn’t even bring it up. Do you think this is a true? I’ve never understood how anyone can look at images such as you’ve provided here of a 12 week fetus and not at least doubted our current laws. The mere fact that during an abortion a fetus must be killed in-utero so as to prevent it from possibly attempting to breath once separated from the mother is argument enough as far as I’m concerned. I cannot imagine being in the O.R. as a staff member and being forbidden from resuscitating an infant struggling to cling to life. Reliable birth control has been available for many decades. Using abortion as birth control is unconscionable.

Second, Hollywood has been the global center of depravity for almost a century, catering to the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and O.J. Simpson. It has no morals, and never had any.

When my article above was written, approximately 55 million babies had been killed since Roe v. Wade. Presumably that number has increased dramatically, resulting in more than ten times the number of human beings who were killed by Hitler and his Nazi thugs in the Holocaust.
Finally, in a 5-4 decision, our Supreme Court is partially rectifying and curbing the infanticide that it unleashed. And yes, women have control over their lives and bodies. But that does not include the right to kill another human being, or fetus.

This is the pinnacle of hypocrisy. John Roberts is the very worst decision that George W. Bush ever made, aside from launching us into the tragic Iraq War, in which more than 5,000 Americans died and many more were maimed, and trillions of dollars were wasted — for nothing.

No American should be the least bit surprised about this. With few exceptions, judges are the very worst of the legal profession. They are lawyers who could not make it in the private practice of law.
Even worse, many judges — and most notably our Supreme Court “Justices” — have blood on their hands since Roe v. Wade. More than 55 million Americans babies have been killed as a result of abortions, which is Infanticide.

The very thought that Garland was ever consisidered to be a “Justice” of our Supreme Court is an abomination and a travesty. However, come to think of it, he would fit right in with the other “Justices” who have blood on their hands.
