In the latest example, a twenty-six-year-old man slashed a teenager at a subway station; choked a woman in a hotel; and attacked a volunteer in a church bathroom during his fourteen-day crime spree. He had been arrested and released five times in New York City before finally being detained on rape charges in Baltimore, Maryland.[2]
This lawlessness didn’t happen overnight. It has been building, in our large cities and all across our great nation. In San Francisco—which so many of us have loved, and where some of us have worked—perhaps the senseless killing of Kate Steinle at Pier 14 on the city’s waterfront drove it home for us. Her killer was an illegal alien who had been deported five times from the sanctuary city.[3]
I testified as an expert witness in that city, and walked another lawyer from our hotel to the BART subway station so he could catch a train to the airport for his flight back to Los Angeles. Both of us were wearing business suits and ties; and I was carrying my laptop. I don’t recall being apprehensive like I was that day, as I walked back to the hotel through or near drug-infested homeless encampments, realizing that I was easy prey; and that it was unlikely anyone would help me if I needed it.
Stores are robbed in San Francisco and other American cities in broad daylight, and no one stops it. Indeed, it is accepted as the “cost of doing business”—or the stores close down, having been hurt already by the Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns. And who can forget what the thugs, slugs, hoods and mongrels of “Black Lives Matter,” Antifa and other far-Left groups have done, without suffering any serious consequences.
They burned our cities; killed or hurt innocent Americans including our police; and destroyed black and other businesses. Thugs like George Floyd have been lionized. No wonder police and other members of law enforcement have resigned, or taken early retirements. Why place their lives at risk, while being hated by those whom they are sworn to protect?[4] Perhaps the latest example involves an illegal alien who shot at police in a 100-mile-per-hour chase, and who has been deported seven times.[5]
The solutions seem obvious. Empower law enforcement to do their jobs, and give them adequate funding. Dispense with woke notions of helping the criminal, instead of protecting America against criminals. Get rid of woke judges and politicians who do nothing to protect us. And do what the Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, did in turning around that cesspool. Clearly, a major economic downturn and increased homelessness, and global strategic challenges will only exacerbate these issues.[6]

Black Victimization
America’s blacks constitute approximately 13 percent of our population. Yet, some highly-educated blacks are spinning the yarn of their victimization. They totally ignore and conveniently forget that slavery existed in the United States until Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman ended it.
See, e.g., https://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/21/ulysses-s-grant-an-american-hero/ (“Ulysses S. Grant: An American Hero”)
Indeed, after our bloody Civil War, America’s Democrats perpetuated slavery in the form of the KKK, segregation, and Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” programs that destroyed black families and consigned them to economic servitude.
Yet, one black college professor has stated:
First, this person cites Martin Luther King, Jr., who was as far from “sainthood” as humanly possible, but his words have resonated. Also, Barack Obama has done more than any President or former President to exacerbate race relations in America.
See, e.g., https://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/2020/06/12/lets-remove-all-evidence-that-barack-obama-martin-luther-king-jr-and-jfk-ever-existed/ (“Let’s Remove All Evidence That Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. And JFK Ever Existed”) and https://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/2021/03/16/race-relations-in-america-have-gone-berserk/ (“Race Relations In America Have Gone Berserk”)
Second, the professor’s comments constitute “victimization” and nothing less, which has fallen on deaf ears for many or most Americans since the Watts Riots in Los Angeles during the summer of 1965. Those riots were important to me because during the summer of 1964, I had joined a classmate of mine from our law school at Berkeley; and we interviewed people in Watts who had complaints against the police.
Afterward, I wrote a law review article for a publication of Berkeley called Issues in Criminology. Thus, memories of those riots remain indelibly in my mind.
See Timothy D. Naegele, “Civilian Complaints Against the Police In Los Angeles,” Issues in Criminology

Since then, we have watched the thugs, slugs, hoods and mongrels of “Black Lives Matter,” Antifa and other far-Left groups burn our cities; kill or hurt innocent Americans including our police; and destroy black and other businesses. They should be put down like rabid animals, but it hasn’t happened. Instead, thugs like George Floyd have been celebrated and lionized, which is absurd. More should share his fate.
See, e.g., https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10978301/Akron-police-release-heartbreaking-footage-Jayland-Walker-shooting.html (“Akron police release footage of Jayland Walker shooting: 25-year-old black DoorDash driver was shot 60 times by eight cops who fired 90 bullets as he fled traffic stop on foot – and left gun in car”)
Third, having spent 21 years nonstop in our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., there were many times that I would take taxis to wherever I had to go. Quite often, these vehicles were driven by highly-educated and very articulate black students from Africa who were studying at Howard University or other local educational institutions. I would talk with them, because I was interested in learning about their impressions of the United States.
I will never forget the feelings being expressed that many American blacks were uneducated, illiterate and barely spoke the English language. It is not too farfetched to believe that these blacks were the products of LBJ’s destruction of black families, which tragically confined them to economic servitude. Does this excuse their violence, as the college professor would suggest? Of course not.
Lastly, the tragedy is compounded as so many non-black Americans are totally turned off by having such victimization shoved down their throats, and seeing undeserved and unearned preferences given to blacks.
Turn on the TV, and there are blacks in every program and commercial, to the exclusion of non-black-Americans – including Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, German-Americans . . . and the list goes on and on. This distortion of the facts creates anger.

No one gave my ancestors any preferences when they arrived in America from Bristol, England; Rottweil, Germany; County Meath, Ireland; and Scotland more than 150 years ago. There was no welfare state to pat them on the head and take care of them, or give them preferences.
Imagine the totally-repulsive notion of reparations for slavery, which is advocated by some on the despicable Left. Instead, non-black Americans should receive reparations and, yes, preferences to compensate them for the skewing of results in college admissions, jobs and the like.

Are Any Of Us Really Safe Anywhere?
See https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/07/06/mass-shooting-safety/ (“How to stay safe in a mass shooting, and overcome the fear they create”)
Who would think we’d be asking the question in America today, much less discussing how to react?
As a U.S. Army Infantry officer, I was trained decades ago at Fort Benning, Georgia how to kill and avoid being killed. We were in the midst of the Vietnam War, and we had to learn it in order to survive.
In the final analysis, I was stationed at the Pentagon, and assigned to the U.S. Army Element of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), where I spent two years doing heady work as a young officer. Friends of mine were killed in Vietnam.
My father hunted ducks, but I believe the ownership of guns can lead to accidents. I don’t preach this, or try to convince anyone, much less seek to lessen their Second Amendment rights to own and carry a weapon. It is a personal choice.
Fast forward to today, and a lawyer friend and former hiking partner of mine, who lives in Los Angeles, told me that he believes Europe is “100 times SAFER!” than the USA. If true, how did this happen?
There’s been a decline in law and order, especially when thugs suffer no consequences walking into stores in San Francisco and elsewhere, in broad daylight, and stealing whatever they want.
Our police and other members of law enforcement are hunted brazenly, instead of protecting us; and thugs like George Floyd are lionized. Why put their lives on the line when they can find safer jobs, or retire? Many are former members of our military, which has been degraded as a result of China’s Covid-19 and woke rules.
Needless to say, our enemies are watching this closely. When the United States cut and ran from Afghanistan, leaving Americans, our allies and billions of dollars of vital war-making equipment behind, it told them exactly what they needed to know.
America was a “paper tiger,” which wouldn’t defend Ukraine, Taiwan or any other pro-Western ally. True or not, it created perceptions. Also, when our cities became lawless, and law enforcement was effectively “handcuffed,” the thugs and wackos were emboldened and unleashed.
Lastly, how would any of us react if we found ourselves in the midst of a mass shooting? My guess is instinctively.
