Is Free Speech Dying Or Dead?

19 03 2024

By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

In our neighbor to the north, Canada, there is a movement to impose life sentences for disfavored speech.[2] Are we next? After all, the so-called “Justices” of our Supreme Court are the greatest killers in human history.[3] To criminalize free speech is a relatively-minor step for them to take.

Hollywood’s shameless Jews are already attempting to intimidate those who veer or depart from the “party line,” and criticize the demonic Benjamin Netanyahu’s multi-decade genocide in Israel.[4] Decades ago, Ariel Sharon and the Rabins would not be silenced when they spoke out against Netanyahu, the “Settlers” and rabid Zionists.

Yitzhak Rabin paid with his life for doing so, as an assassin’s bullet silenced him.[5] To her eternal credit, his widow Leah Rabin spoke out vigorously against Netanyahu and the forces of darkness, evil and intimidation in Israel. In the United States today, there are those who seek to intimidate and silence free speech on college campuses such as Berkeley, where the “Free Speech Movement” began in the 1960s.[6]

The question has become whether the forces of pure evil will attempt to silence Donald Trump by killing him? They have tried everything else, as the potentially-historic elections approach later this year.[7] Assassins’ bullets struck down Abraham Lincoln, and almost ended the life of Ronald Reagan. The loss of power must be terrifying for the forces of darkness on America’s Left.

Challenging The Sacred Cows As 2023 Comes To An End

26 12 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

The American media—or “Fake News,” as Donald Trump prefers to call it—fills us with a daily barrage of “tripe.”  It is intended to shape our opinions; and our views of ourselves, our communities, our states, our nation, and yes of our wider world.  Products are sold in countless ways; and we are buffeted with advertising from dawn to dusk, birth to death.

When such “attacks” crater—as in the case of Anheuser-Busch’s use of a “freak of nature” to pitch its Bud Lite beer brand—billions of dollars in sales revenues can evaporate overnight.[2].  Disney, which has been part of our lives since we were kids, was hit hard by similar problems.  Indeed, as I draft this article on my phone with the TV on in front of me and its sound muted, there are two men kissing in an ad for some drug.

Few of us grew up with such cultural challenges; and parents are rebelling nationally against their young children being indoctrinated from an early age.  Similarly, university administrators are being fired for any equivocation about anti-Semitism, instead of vigorously condemning it.  The abortion issue is “hot-wired,” as many women assert that it is their right to choose, while opponents claim that every life is precious, and any abortion constitutes the crime of Infanticide that must be punished.

In this context, several “sacred cows” can be considered:

•  Are Americans such colossal dupes they fail to realize that brain-addled Joe Biden is leading us to multiple military conflicts globally, and putting our military forces in harm’s way, which may result in a full-fledged World War III?

In the Middle East including Iraq, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal; in Ukraine; off the Korean Peninsula; relating to Taiwan; and here at home.[3]  Are we the protectors of the world?

Also, Americans are realizing how totally corrupt the Biden Family Crime Syndicate and their co-conspirators are[4]; and how the Democrats—and yes, I began as one—are distorting everything that we cherish and hold dear.[5]  And how the eco-Nazis have distorted the world in which we live.[6]

•  Israel is our ally, and must be supported fully and unconditionally.

This is pure poppycock.  Long before Hamas’ attacks of October 7th, Benjamin Netanyahu and the so-called “Settlers” and rabid Zionists were attacking Palestinians and others.  Barack Obama hated the Apartheid in South Africa, which he has compared with the Israeli Apartheid.

Any notion that Jews have some God-given right to the land is a fairytale, and tantamount to saying that all of America should be given back to the Indians—or trillions of dollars in reparations should be paid to them.

Decades ago, Netanyahu morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors.  He was hated by such giants as Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and Leah Rabin blamed him for her husband Yitzhak’s tragic assassination.  She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu at the helm of Israel’s government; and her views were prescient and prophetic.

In the last decade or more, anti-Semitism has been growing exponentially, with fewer globally believing in what the Israelis are selling.  Tragically, innocent Jews are denying their “Jewishness.”  Some of us remember Israel’s unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty, and believe something similar can happen again.[7]

Also, no one should forget how Israel pushed us into the tragic Iraq War by falsely claiming that Saddam Hussein had WMDs.  This resulted in 5,000 Americans dying, and many more being maimed for life—our “Wounded Warriors”—and more than a trillion dollars wasted.

When will the butcher Netanyahu be taken out?  At the very least, he must be tried by the International Criminal Court for his many crimes.[8].  Tragically, Jews are the most hated group of individuals globally; and Netanyahu has fanned the flames of anti-Semitism, and embarked on genocide.[9]

•  The United States is a democratic country, and its elections are free and fair.

More and more, as we analyze the elections of 2020, it is clear that election abuses took place, which are being covered up to this day.  Many Americans rightly ask: Did my vote really count?  Clearly, the integrity of our elections must be restored.[10]

•  We are a nation of immigrants, who should welcome those from other countries.

Even those who have supported open borders are saying now that enough is enough.[11]

•  We are not at risk of annihilation, nor should we worry about rising crime nationwide.

We have enemies globally who seek to weaken if not destroy us.  By committing our military to areas of the world that subject us to maniacal risks, we engage in destructive heresy.  We are not the policemen of the world.  Those days are long gone.  For example, protecting or perpetuating the Apartheid state of Israel is not in our best interests, if it ever was.  Few Americans realize that President Franklin D. Roosevelt and General George Marshall opposed the creation of Israel; and then FDR died.

Crime seems omnipresent in America today.  The thugs, slugs, hoods and mongrels of “Black Lives Matter,” Antifa and other far-Left groups have burned our cities and killed innocent Americans including our police.  They have destroyed black and other businesses; and they have unleashed massive fears among elderly blacks and others, as the latest crimes are the news of the day, every day.  Yet, they have not been punished.  It’s as if the inmates are truly running the asylum.  Those days must end.

•  Is our greatest enemy, the thought police?

When all is said and done, is nothing sacred in this world?  It’s as if the Pigs in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” have triumphed, and we have given up—if we let them.[12, 13]  Authoritarianism would reign over democracy.  Despite the Stalinist, Hitleresque attempts to regimen us, we have a Higher Power, to which everything else is subservient.[14]

Americans can handle the truth, even the unvarnished truth.  But they will not tolerate lies.  Is the assassination of John F. Kennedy one of those lies?[15]

. . .

Next, why would anyone who is not a rabid Democrat ever want to run for the highest offices in the land, after witnessing what Donald Trump and his family have endured, and continue to be subjected to—along with their supporters?[16]

. . .

Lastly, Merry Christmas to all, and best wishes to you and your families for the new year ahead.  Long live free speech!

Why J Street Deserves Support

11 12 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

I came across this organization about a year after it was founded in Washington, D.C. by Jeremy Ben-Ami, whose ancestors were among the fifty-or-so families who founded Tel Aviv.  His credentials were impeccable.  Years ago, I wrote a review of his fine book, “A New Voice For Israel,” which I believe has withstood the test of time, albeit it is out of print.[2]

In it, he concludes about the treatment of Palestinians and others: “Is this how I wanted to be treated when I was a minority in another people’s country?”  Isn’t this the nub of it—as a law school professor of mine used to say—or the central issue today?  Benjamin Netanyahu has avoided jail by responding to the Hamas attacks of October 7th and being as vicious as the attackers.  But this should surprise no one.

Decades ago, he morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors; and he and the “Settlers” and rabid Zionists have exercised brutality that rivals their opponents.  Indeed, it bears repeating that he was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and the “Lioness” Leah Rabin—whom I heard speak at the Washington Press Club—blamed him for her husband’s tragic assassination.  She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu at the helm of Israel’s government; and her views were prescient and prophetic.

Anti-Semitism has been rising for more than a decade; and it has been impacting American Jews, Israeli Jews, and those who live elsewhere and have been forced to hide and deny their “Jewishness.”  But the spread of anti-Semitism may have only begun.  And ill-conceived efforts have been undertaken in the United States and other countries, to emasculate free speech, instead of discussing these issues rationally and unemotionally.

In ancient Rome, the practice evolved of killing the messenger, or the bearer of bad news.[3]. Today, those who criticize Netanyahu or his fellow travelers are maligned; and university leaders who do not fall into lockstep are forced to resign or grovel before their critics.  In leading J Street, Ben-Ami has been required to walk an ever-diminishing narrow line, to maintain the organization’s financial and political support.  Hopefully, those who follow him will be equally skilled and adroit.

Why is any of this relevant to those of us who are not Jewish?  Because lots of us know Jews who have been our friends since grade school.  And because Israel may be destroyed by Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs, including EMP weapons); and our friends may worry about their futures and that of their families.[4]  And because such a conflagration might reach our shores.[5]

While J Street is a “devout” Leftist group that supports brain-addled Joe Biden—and seems to abhor the GOP, Independents and our President Donald Trump—nevertheless it is a voice of reason regarding Israel, where such voices are in short supply.  And thus far its leader, Jeremy Ben-Ami, has not wavered on the issue of free speech for all, which is a blessing and critical to perpetuate the ideals that undergird our great country.[6]

No One Should Be Surprised

30 10 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

Anti-Semitism has existed for millennia.  It didn’t begin with Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.  Decades ago, I visited Dachau, and saw the results of Man’s inhumanity to his fellow beings.  Because my paternal ancestors came from Germany in 1849, I was interested in learning how and why it might have occurred.  My search and questioning ended when an elderly German woman told me that the only thing wrong with Hitler was that he hadn’t killed all of the Jews.

I was stunned.  But put into perspective, her family had been wealthy; they hailed from Munich; and they helped to finance Hitler’s rise to power.  When she told me, she had no remorse or equivocation.  And I didn’t lay a guilt trip on her, because I was trying to learn and get straight answers, not to challenge, reform or punish anyone.  Too often today, those who despise anti-Semitism engage in ridicule, censorship or worse, which doesn’t make it go away.

One man today, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, has done more to rekindle anti-Semitism than anyone on the face of the earth.  Before Hamas did anything recently, he was trying to avoid prison for his crimes.  He was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and Leah Rabin blamed him for her husband’s tragic assassination.  She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu at the helm of Israel’s government; and her views were prescient.

It can be argued that decades ago he morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors; and that everything he has done since then was predictable.  Tragically, in league with the “Settlers” and Zionists, he has used and misused Israelis, and hurt Jews in Israel, the United States and globally.  For every action there is a reaction, and anti-Semitism has been growing exponentially for decades.

Perhaps my deepest concerns are for American Jews, and especially those whose ancestors came here long ago—in the 1800s, in some cases, or even before—and who were not immigrant Jews.  And I am concerned about innocent Jews who live outside of Israel and the United States, and who are denying their “Jewishness.”  It is tantamount to me denying my heredity, or that I am an American or a Christian.

My maternal ancestors came from England, Ireland and Scotland, with the earliest one arriving in 1770, and the others arriving in 1850.  Yet, in those countries, anti-Semitism is rising today, just as it is here in America.  If anyone believes it will go away because the “thought police” condemn it, they are naive.  Right or wrong, much of the world looks at the actions of Zionists since the state of Israel was born in 1948, and condemns them.  Like Netanyahu, it can be argued that they morphed into their Nazi oppressors.

Why is any of this important to each of us?  Because what is happening in Israel today can spin out of control and be the spark that ignites World War III.  And because WMDs can be obtained that would end Israel’s existence and that of innocent Jews and others.  Just as no one should be surprised that anti-Semitism exists, and has existed for millennia, no one should be surprised if a spark ignites a vastly-wider war that might be unstoppable, and impact all of us and our loved ones.

Hatreds need to be wound down, not exacerbated.  Israel and its haters need to be pulled back from the edge of an abyss of unfathomable depths.  Killing never solved anything, much less when it has occurred on a wholesale basis.  Quite to the contrary, killing can beget more killing, and spin out of control.  God blesses the peacemakers, not those who edge ever closer to the Gates of Hell.  Cooler heads need to prevail, not the firebrands.[2]

On a personal note, this morning I received an announcement from a website reminding me of the death of a Jewish friend and former client.  He died in 2002, and I remain the only person who has posted a tribute to him, which is surprising.

I grew up with Jewish friends in Los Angeles; and many remain my friends to this day.  My former client was very wealthy, but my friends have always included those who have nothing—or very little—materially.

A Tragedy Of Truly Epic Proportions

26 10 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

Anti-Semitism has been rising for decades, on a global basis.  I used to keep track of and chronicle many of the reported incidents, but they became too numerous.  Some of us grew up with Jewish friends in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the United States; and they remain our friends to this day.  They weren’t products of the Holocaust.  Their families came here long before the Holocaust occurred.

Perhaps one example will suffice, which is illustrative of the Jews with whom I grew up:

A Jewish lawyer from the Midwest with whom I was working on a lawsuit . . . came to Washington, D.C. and had never seen the Holocaust Museum, so I took him there.  His family came to the United States in the 1800s, and he told me that none of his relatives were victims of the Holocaust, nor did he know anyone who was affected by it.  In many ways, he did not relate to it, although he was moved emotionally after we toured the museum.  He and the Jews with whom I grew up may not relate to [J Street’s Jeremy] Ben-Ami, inter alia, because neither they nor their parents are immigrant Jews.  To them, Israel may be as distant and foreign as the Germany, Ireland, Scotland and England of my ancestors are to me.

I had visited Dachau during a summer in Europe when I was in law school at Berkeley, so I had seen the Nazi horrors firsthand, but my lawyer-friend had not.  I had tried to understand how Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany—the country of my father’s ancestors, who came to America in 1849.  What I learned was that anti-Semitism is alive in Germany; and that “the campaign to silence dissent”—as Ben-Ami describes intimidation, fear, invective, division and discrimination in the Jewish community—is what allowed Nazism to flourish.  Dissenters were viewed as traitors, hated and killed.

Contrariwise, dissent and healthy debate must be welcomed and encouraged; and they are the very essence of America’s democracy and our freedoms.  Far too often, criticism—for example, of our institutions such as law enforcement or the judiciary—is equated with disloyalty toward either the United States or Israel, which it is not.  “Witch hunts” and “thought police” (Ben-Ami’s terms) have no place in democratic societies.[2]

Tragically, Israel was born in violence; and that may undergird how it is viewed in the world today, and foretell its future.  Decades ago, Benjamin Netanyahu morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors; and he is hated in Israel and globally.  Ariel Sharon and the Rabins hated him; and the “Lioness” Leah Rabin blamed him for her husband’s tragic assassination.  She believed that peace was impossible with Netanyahu at the helm of Israel; and her views were prescient.

The “Settlers” and rabid Zionists effectively morphed into their ancestors’ Nazi oppressors too, by taking the lands of their Palestinian neighbors, and treating them as second-class citizens, if that much.  Perhaps Ben-Ami said it best: “Is this how I wanted to be treated when I was a minority in another people’s country?”[3]

Needless to say, any criticisms of Israel are met with threats—some of which are violent—and claims of anti-Semitism.  There are blatant attempts to intimidate, censor and silence the truth, including efforts to damage the futures of college students when they graduate.[4]  It should not surprise anyone that this only increases anti-Semitism in the U.S. and globally.

What is tragic too is that innocent Jews who live outside of Israel and the United States will be targeted, and no one can protect them.  This is what Netanyahu, the Settlers and Zionists have wrought.  What goes around, comes around.  And this is a tragedy that cannot be stopped.  Equally tragic is that efforts will be made to censor and silence the voices of those who dare to discuss it.

Why is any of this important to non-Jews?  Because what is happening in Israel today might spin out of control and lead to a chain of events globally, which would affect each and every one of us in ways we never envisioned—or World War III.

Does Anyone Really Care?

9 10 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

Those who seek to destroy Israel caught it flat-footed when they began their onslaught recently[2], which may prove to be the greatest attack on the Apartheid state since its war of independence.[3]  Israelis and Jews are hated globally; and perhaps they are the most hated group of beings in human history.

Adolf Hitler’s Nazis reputedly killed six million during the Holocaust, in grotesque ways—which have been equaled recently in terms of sheer barbarism by the Russian attacks on men, women and children in Ukraine.  The killing of one human being by another is an affront to God and everything that is sacred in Life.[4]

But in Israel, killing and subjugation are two-way streets.  Israel’s IDF, its “Settlers” and radical Zionists have destroyed Palestinian homes; seized their lands; and treated them as second-class citizens, if that much.  Hate begets hate; and the cycle repeats itself until it often spins out of control.  Our Revolutionary War and Civil War are examples of that, as well as World Wars I and II.

The Middle East is a powder keg, where the opposing elements either have nuclear and other nation-ending weaponry already, or they have relatively-easy access to it.  Reportedly, they are eight nations that have such weapons[5]; and “money talks.”  Indeed, given how “porous” Israel’s once-vaulted “Iron Dome” umbrella is apparently, it’s surprising that a nuclear or EMP Attack hasn’t occurred already.[6]

Does anyone really care if Israel and its enemies are blown to smithereens?  Those who hate Jews and what they have done to the Palestinians and others presumably don’t care; and payback would be ever so sweet.  Years ago, Benjamin Netanyahu—who was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins—morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors; and presumably he doesn’t care or he wouldn’t be launching Hell against those who oppose him.[7]

Religious fanatics among the Settlers and Zionists presumably do not care either, and believe “might makes right.”  Hamas and its zealots do not care or they would not have launched the kidnappings and deaths that they have.  Then who does care?  Those innocents who are caught in the conflagration, or whose loved ones become victims; and those innocent Jews who live outside of Israel and the United States, and who may be targeted too.

And the world will care if the death and destruction spread.  Even if one does not have a “horse in the race,” to be flippant, the world’s oil supply might be affected adversely, which would produce ripple effects globally—of staggering dimensions.  Also, treaty obligations might ensnare countries and their citizens who seem far removed from the fighting today.[8].  If we revisit the history of World War I, it is worth noting that the death of one Archduke set off a chain of events that made the world topsy-turvy, killing an estimated 17 million.[9]

Netanyahu Is Destroying Israel’s Democracy, And Biden Is Destroying America

21 09 2023

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

To be especially kind, Joe Biden is “brain addled.”  He is an embarrassment globally; and he is a criminal who should be impeached and removed from office.  The same is true of his Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, their “hatchet man” Jack Smith and many others in the “Deep State.”

They are turning off Democrats, former Democrats, Independents and the non-aligned.  When I left the United States Senate, I concluded that the Democrats were “evil” but smart, while the Republicans were “Neanderthals” and dumb.  I have been an Independent ever since.

Joe Biden has been systematically destroying the Democratic Party; and it is in a bind.  Those who count don’t have the guts to dump him, especially with Willie Brown’s former ho Kamala Harris standing in the wings to replace him, and being a laughingstock in America and globally.[2]  Gavin Newsom wants to be the Democrats’ nominee, and perhaps Michelle Obama does too, but Joe Biden may take the party down with him between now and November of 2024.

Decades ago, Benjamin Netanyahu morphed into his ancestors’ Nazi oppressors.  He was hated by Ariel Sharon and the Rabins; and the “Lioness” Leah Rabin blamed him for her husband’s tragic assassination.  She believed peace was impossible with Netanyahu at Israel’s helm; and her views were prescient.[3]  Today, he and the Settlers and rabid Zionists are systematically “destroying” Israel’s democracy, while Biden is destroying his party and America.

“Make America Great Again” (MAGA) supporters are united behind Donald Trump’s reelection, and more committed than ever.  Independents and even disgruntled minorities (e.g., Hispanics, blacks) are drawn to their ranks, by increasing numbers.  Clearly, Israel’s hardliners will take umbrage at my conclusions above.  And many or most Democrats are in denial about their political prospects with Biden as their titular leader.  But both groups need to be realistic and appreciate what the future may hold for them.

American Jews Hide in Fear

2 01 2020

  By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

This is the conclusion of Rabbi Shmuel Boteach, as reported by Newsmax.com:

The spate of anti-Semitic attacks have the Jewish people living in fear now in the United States, potentially creating a society of “secret Jews” retreating to obscurity, according to Rabbi Shmuel “Shmuley” Boteach on Newsmax TV.

“The world’s oldest hatred: we were persecuted in Europe, slaughtered, annihilated, gassed to death, but in America we were protected. I can’t believe this is all happening.”

Boteach, speaking from a home nearby the recent anti-Semitic stabbing attack in Upstate New York where his family and friends were in hiding, called for federal laws that specifically mention anti-Semitism and do not water down the targeted hate under generic hate-crime terms.

“We have to stop this game,” Boteach told host Bob Sellers. “We have to call Jew hatred what it is. First thing is: Special legislation that targets anti-Semitism. You have to use the word anti-Semitism. This is not just another form of bigotry. This is not just another form of prejudice.

“This is a special hatred of the Jewish people that has to be combated, and the United States, land of the free, home of the brave, must take the lead.

Boteach said the recent attacks in and around New York City are targeting those who look and dress like orthodox Jews.

“We are the targets, and it’s very uncomfortable,” Boteach added.

“It was a religious Jew hatred, now it’s a more racial anti-Semitism. Even if we Jews converted to another religion, they still hate us. All I know is this never happened in the United States.”[2]

First, it must be stated emphatically: not a single Jew anywhere in this world should hide in fear, or live in fear.

Second, anti-Semitism has been increasing in Europe and globally for more than a decade.[3]  The fact that it is increasing in the United States should not be surprising.

Third, there are a myriad of causes, some of which are understood; others not.  Many Jews and non-Jews blame the policies of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He was hated by Barack Obama, the Rabins, and Ariel Sharon.  Indeed, former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s widow Leah—who was described by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former Prime Minister Shimon Peres as a “lioness”—believed it was the climate of hate that Netanyahu created during the election campaign of 1995, which laid the groundwork for a Jew to assassinate her husband.  She never forgave Netanyahu and detested him.[4]

Fourth, the mere fact that anti-Semitism is increasing in the United States and globally is a cause of great concern.  Religion in general is under attack; and Judaism is a very small religion.  There are approximately 2.4 billion Christians in the world, and 1.9 followers of Islam; and the number of Jews is approximately 14.5 million, which makes it one of the smallest religions with the fewest followers.[5]

Fifth, discrimination has probably existed in one form or another since Man set foot on the Earth.  It is not new; and most religious and ethnic groups have been discriminated against in the past.  The fact that Jews are singled out today, even in countries that have few if any Jews, goes to the genesis of discrimination generally, of which anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are merely a part.  The United States is the world’s largest melting pot; and discrimination seems to arise from that fact, instead of religious and ethnic tolerance.[6]

Sixth, as I have written previously:

Since I was a little kid growing up in West Los Angeles, I have always had friends who were Jewish.  . . .  They have helped me; they have loved me; they will be my friends for life; and whatever happens to Israel affects them. It does not affect me; I am not Jewish.

Israel could disappear off the face of the earth today, and it would not affect my life one iota. I could wake up tomorrow and go about my life as if it never happened—similar to the disappearance of Moldova as a nation, which is even larger. However, it might affect the lives of Jewish friends whom I love and care about.[7]

Lastly, former President Barack Obama was and is a racist and an anti-Semite, who did more than any other president to sow the seeds of racism and other divisions.[8]  Perhaps Americans are witnessing the results of what he sowed.

Ariel Sharon Is Missed

6 01 2014

 By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

It seems like ages since Ariel Sharon slipped into a coma from which he never returned, much less as a political force in this earthly world.  Yet, perhaps he was there after all, resting with the knowledge that he was a man of his times, who had shaped and reshaped history.

He was a complex human being who produced seemingly inconsistent policies.  By being the architect of Israel’s settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza, despite Palestinian and international protests, he appeared to be forever at odds with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and thus an opponent of peaceful coexistence between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and lasting peace in the Middle EastHenry A. Kissinger noted some years ago: “For most of his career, Sharon’s strategic goal was the incorporation of the West Bank into Israel by a settlement policy designed to prevent Palestinian self-government over significant contiguous territory.”

However, he came seemingly full circle and withdrew from Gaza and removed Jewish settlers from both Gaza and the West Bank, and returned their lands to the Palestinians.  Like the hard-liner Richard Nixon who opposed communists and their ideology throughout his life, yet opened the door to China, Sharon was an enigma.  Both were skilled chess players; and perhaps Sharon supported expansive settlements merely as a bargaining chip that would be discarded when it served the interests of peace, or no longer had any strategic value.

He seemed to be a pragmatist who concluded that it was in Israel’s best interests to defend only those lands that were militarily and politically defensible, and sacrifice the rest, and to jettison the settlers who had served as pawns in a larger chess game.  By zigging and then zagging, and by being a key player in the establishment of the right-wing Likud Party and then breaking from it to found the centrist Kadima Party, Sharon proved to be an able and skillful politician right up to the end of his career.

He fought in a Jewish militia opposed to British control; and he served in Israel’s war of independence with the Arab states and in subsequent wars, and was considered a war hero by many Israelis.  He was wounded in a battle to break the siege of Jerusalem and carried its effects all of his life, including near blindness in one eye; and he was grazed by a bullet in the head during a battle many years later.

He visited the Temple Mount to emphasize Israel’s claim of sovereignty, outraging Muslims and provoking widespread violence; and he is blamed for the ruthless killing and suffering of countless Palestinians.  Yet, his strength was being more in tune with Israeli public opinion than anyone else.  Ghazi al Saadi, a Palestinian commentator, described Sharon as “the first Israeli leader who stopped claiming Israel had a right to all of the Palestinians’ land.”  He added:  “A live Sharon is better for the Palestinians now, despite all the crimes he has committed against us.”

Like Yitzhak Rabin before him, whose mantle he assumed, history will judge Sharon’s accomplishments and speculate as to what a difference his continued leadership might have meant in the future.  It is certain, however, that Likud’s Benjamin Netanyahu is no Ariel Sharon, nor does he hold a candle to Rabin.  Indeed, Rabin’s widow Leah—who was described by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former Prime Minister Shimon Peres as a “lioness”—believed it was the climate of hate that Netanyahu created during the election campaign of 1995, which laid the groundwork for a Jew to assassinate her husband.  She never forgave Netanyahu and detested him.[2]

The fact that Netanyahu attained his coveted goal of leading Israel again, after his scandal-ridden previous attempt at it, may have changed the region’s history forever.  He was the nemesis of both Rabin and Sharon, two giants; and his return from political oblivion may still be marked by untold chaos at a time when political and military adventurism and demagoguery are the last things that are needed from the leader of Israel.

It was a fateful day, however, when a born-again Christian and a Jew, one slim and fit and the other decidedly rotund, shared a helicopter ride; and Sharon gave then-Texas Governor George W. Bush a tour over the Israeli-occupied territories.  On that day and in the days that followed, a bond of mutual respect emerged between Bush and Sharon that would survive the roller coaster of international politics.  They were a political odd couple who seemed to instinctively trust each other at a time in history when trust was a rare currency vis-à-vis the seemingly intractable problems of the Middle East.

Trust has been a missing ingredient during much of the political life of Netanyahu, who has been perceived as being untrustworthy by countless Israelis and leaders of other nations.  Indeed, he has served as a foil against which Sharon’s accomplishments may be viewed and measured.  Sharon emerged as the right leader for Israel at the right time, just as Rabin had done before him.  Netanyahu’s presence on Israel’s political scene makes Sharon’s greatness and that of Rabin stand out in bold relief by comparison.

Sharon’s stroke and coma deprived the Bush administration of its closest working partner in the Middle East.  The clock began ticking in the region again; and there have been reports that Israel will attack Iran’s nuclear installations.  I am forever reminded of what a prominent American (who is a Jew and a strong supporter of Israel) told me several years ago: “I have long thought that Israel will not make it, if only because of what are cavalierly called WMD [weapons of mass destruction] and its very tight geographical compression.  All else is immaterial, including the Palestinians, or us, or the nature of Israel’s [government].”

I was stunned by this person’s words, and I have reflected on them many times since.  Henry Kissinger added several years ago: “Far too much of the debate within the Palestinian camp has been over whether Israel should be destroyed immediately by permanent confrontation or in stages in which occasional negotiations serve as periodic armistices.”  I do not subscribe to the notion that anything is inevitable or “written.”  However, it is courageous and visionary men like Rabin and Sharon who have guided Israel through perilous times, when lesser men would have foundered.

Netanyahu campaigned on a hard-line platform that would grant to a new Palestinian state only a fraction of West Bank land; and effectively, he has brought the peace process to a screeching halt because he opposes such a state entirely, whether he articulates it or not.  When Likud suffered a defeat in the Israeli elections, with Netanyahu at its helm, he characteristically tried to deflect blame from himself by claiming that a comatose Ariel Sharon was responsible for the political “crash.”

The Wall Street Journal put it mildly in an editorial:  “[Netanyahu’s] attempt to blame a dying and helpless Mr. Sharon for Likud’s drubbing . . . was not a class act.”  Indeed, it was tasteless, opportunistic, and among the reasons why so many people view Netanyahu as being pathetic and demonic—but it was certainly consistent with his treatment of both Rabin and Sharon.

Most Israelis believe at least one of two long-time dreams is unattainable; namely, the idea of a “Greater Israel,” and of a negotiated peace with the Palestinians.  Contrariwise, the Palestinians have steadfastly refused to repudiate their dream of a “greater Palestine,” stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean, which—in the words of Yossi Klein Halevi, an Israeli journalist and writer—“would supplant and destroy the Jewish state.”

Halevi further opined: “The settlement movement ignored the moral corruption of occupation and the demographic threat to Israel’s identity as a Jewish and democratic state posed by the forcible absorption of several million Palestinians into Israeli society.”  And he added: “Israel will almost certainly find itself without Greater Israel—and without peace.  . . . Confronted with the possibility of a nuclear Iran committed to Israel’s destruction and with a terrorist state emerging in Gaza and the West Bank, Israelis need the sustenance of dreams.”

President Bush pledged to help create an independent Palestinian state before the end of his second term, which suffered a fatal blow with the loss of Sharon, and ended Sharon’s personal ambition to set Israel’s permanent borders too.  The Times of the UK quoted one official as saying: “It [was] unbelievable.  He was the Prime Minister.  Nothing moved without going through him.  Everything was connected to him and then he faded away,” the official said, with a click of his fingers.

Perhaps the return to business as usual showed the strength of Israel’s democracy and political system, which has been surprisingly stable; or maybe it was a sign that his stroke had not shaken the country to the same extent as the assassination of Rabin.  Or maybe it was simply another reminder of how fame is fleeting, and the public’s attention span is short in Israel and other media-driven societies, especially in the age of 24-hour news cycles.  Yet, Sharon is missed; that much is certain—and I never thought that I would write those words or feel this way.[3]

I disagreed with his settlement policies for many years, believing they were harmful to the settlers who trusted him because ultimately they would feel betrayed; and that such policies were unnecessarily confrontational and antagonistic to the Palestinians.  However, I have missed “Arik,” and I know people in various parts of the world, Jews and non-Jews alike, feel the same way.  He was a giant of Israeli politics.  More than that, he was a lion—albeit a rotund one—God love him.

The Madness Of Benjamin Netanyahu

8 03 2012

 By Timothy D. Naegele[1]

The recent sober assessment of Arnaud de Borchgrave—the distinguished editor-at-large of The Washington Times and of United Press International—is worth reading and reflecting on:

U.S. three-star generals and admirals, Defense Intelligence Agency and CIA sources, along with three former CENTCOM commanders and the three former chiefs of Israeli intelligence services who retired last year—a formidable array of military and civilian experts who share impressive expertise on the Middle East—are all waving a red flag against unilateral Israeli or bilateral U.S.-Israeli bombing of Iran’s nuclear installations.

They can see such actions triggering a wider conflict spreading to the entire Middle East and the rest of the Arab world.

. . .

A three-star with much recent experience in the Middle East says an Israeli strike could move the entire region in the wrong direction.

Iran can close the Strait of Hormuz, not just for a few hours, as the Israelis say, but long enough to drive oil prices into the stratosphere. An admiral with years of experience in the region at different times of his career said privately Iran can sow thousands of mines in an area that handles one-fifth of the world’s daily oil requirements. They are below the surface and can be detonated by remote control as a warship sails over them. Iran’s shore line, which covers the entire eastern side of the Persian Gulf, is pock-marked with concealed missile sites.

The Iranians would also use hundreds of small boats in a swarming configuration that U.S. warships are prepared to cope with—but one or two are bound to get through a curtain of fire and punch a hole in the hull of a U.S. or NATO minesweeper.

Such a small boat in Aden harbor in October 2000 punctured the hull of the USS Cole, a $1 billion Arleigh Burke class destroyer, killing 17 sailors, and putting the warship out of service for 18 months with a $220 million repair bill. Cost of the operation to al-Qaida: $10,000 plus three volunteer suicide bombers.

The response of Israeli naysayers is that such tactics would hurt Iran far more than any of its intended targets. U.S. generals and admirals respond that the Iranian leadership wouldn’t be averse to cutting off its nose to spite its face.

The Iranians can also absorb temporary belt-tightening far more readily than Western Europeans. And with gas at the pump suddenly selling at $10 to $15 a gallon, U.S. President Barack Obama’s updated resume wouldn’t look too appealing at the ballot box in November.

. . .

U.S. Navy 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain is vulnerable; two-thirds of its population is Shiite Muslim and rooting for Tehran in the current conflict.

. . .

Most Iran watchers in the intelligence community say that one Israeli or U.S. bomb on Iran would push Iran’s youthful protesters right into the arms of the government they despise.

. . .

More important than his meeting with Obama is Netanyahu’s speech to the annual AIPAC convention. The endorsement of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Washington’s most powerful lobby, is tantamount to solid congressional approval.[2]

By attacking Iran, Netanyahu and Israel will stir up a hornet’s nest in the Islamic world, and achieve little or nothing militarily. Israel does not have the means of destroying Iran’s nuclear capabilities; and it is likely that the mission would end in failure. Also, what Arnaud de Borchgrave neglected to mention in his fine article is that in the Middle East, in Europe and worldwide, Israelis and other innocent Jews can be targeted by Islamic fascists; and there is nothing that Israel or its Mossad can do to prevent it.

A “silent” holocaust might take place globally, which would be unstoppable.  There are 1.3–1.65 billion followers of Islam worldwide, while Iran’s total population is approximately 78 million; and there are 14–18 million Jews worldwide, of which 6 million live in Israel.[3]

It is the Narcissistic demagogue Netanyahu who must be stopped, before he triggers actions in the Middle East and elsewhere that might be truly catastrophic.  His goal is to provoke an American attack on Iran, which is outrageous, reprehensible, and similar to the pressures that were brought to bear before the United States invaded Iraq.  There are no limits to his arrogance, or the extremes to which he will go to provoke the American attack.  He and Iran’s Ahmadinejad and Russia’s Putin are “moral equivalents.”[4]

America is not Israel’s surrogate; the two countries are not tied at the hip; and Iran is not America’s fight.  The American people are bone-tired of fighting wars in the region, and want out.  And our valiant and heroic military forces have been stretched far enough.[5]

The New York Times has reported:

Thomas E. Donilon, Mr. Obama’s national security adviser, . . . spent two days [in Jerusalem] recently, along with a team of intelligence and defense officials, meeting with Mr. Netanyahu and his lieutenants. Both sides contended that the meetings were highly successful. The Israelis were told that the administration not only says it would use military force if sanctions against Iran failed, it is also doing the planning for it.[6]

Not a single drop of American blood should ever be spilled to protect or defend Israel, period.[7]  It is on its own, sink or swim.  It is a pariah state worldwide because of Netanyahu, who continually seeks to dictate and distort U.S. foreign and national security policies.  Barack Obama was right in reaching out to the Islamic world—and he must block all warmongering actions by Netanyahu.  An Israeli attack on Iran would undoubtedly draw fury from Islamic nations and the followers of Islam around the world.  America is not at war with Islam; and Netanyahu must not be allowed to provoke this.

On some level Obama views the Israelis as the oppressors, or the “enemy,” and the Palestinians as the oppressed—reflecting his deep-seated beliefs about Apartheid in South Africa, which he viewed as pure evil.  If one has any doubts, read his book, “Dreams from My Father.”[8]  Hence, there is no kinship whatsoever between Obama and Netanyahu; and it is not surprising that Obama would treat him with outright disdain and contempt.  Viewed in this context, one can understand what Obama is doing and why he is doing it.  To him, it is likely that Netanyahu personifies that oppression.

The following bears repeating:

[Netanyahu] was hated by former Israeli Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and Yitzhak Rabin—and especially by Rabin’s wife Leah, who blamed Netanyahu for her husband’s assassination. She saw “only doom for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process” with Netanyahu at Israel’s helm; and her views were prescient.[9]

Perhaps most surprising—and disturbing—is that the Israeli people have not ousted Netanyahu before now, despite the warnings of Sharon, the Rabins and others.  One of my Jewish friends who follows Israeli politics closely is convinced that the problem lies in its fractured parliamentary democracy. Small splinter groups, such as Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party, are allowed to dictate Israeli domestic and national security policies.

It is a case of the “tail wagging the dog,” and Netanyahu has skillfully maneuvered this political system to his benefit.  Indeed, there appears to be little likelihood of change, certainly before he marches his fellow Israelis—and potentially Jews worldwide—to the edge of an abyss, of unfathomable depths.

In advance of Obama’s meeting with Netanyahu, the Los Angeles Times reported:

Obama said he plans to tell Netanyahu that he will order military strikes against Iran’s nuclear program if the current international sanctions are not successful in deterring its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

. . .

“I think that the Israeli government recognizes that, as president of the United States, I don’t bluff,” Obama said. . . .[10]

This is absurd, and simply political theater.

Obama has cut and run from Iraq, like a dog with his tail between his legs.  He is in the process of doing the same thing in Afghanistan, and losing the Middle East to Islamic fascists.  And he is trying to “gut” our great nation’s military might.[11]  The idea that America’s “Hamlet on the Potomac”—and “Jimmy Carter-lite”—would all of a sudden reverse course and launch the United States into a potentially devastating war with Iran and the Islamic world is nonsensical.

He is a political actor, pure and simple, and not much more.  Any notion that he has “Israel’s back,” and will protect it, must be viewed in the context of how he has protected the Iraqis, the Afghans, and dissenters in both Iran and Syria—which is not at all.[12]

The path on which Netanyahu is leading the Israelis is fraught with peril for their tiny Jewish nation . . . and potentially for Jews worldwide.  He is determined to take the United States and the American people on the “joy ride” with him, which is utter madness.

On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it.

. . .

Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded.
